Anxious but somehow still optimistic. I’m so proud of my spouse and daughters. An open mind, kindness and apologizing when you’re wrong are signs of strength. he/him

I need all of #lawsky to see this video from a Colorado appeals court livestream yesterday. I am in actual tears. Sound *incredibly* on, the subtitles will not help.

Why the “all autistic people lack empathy” narrative is wrong…

Autistic people actually experience empathy in a wide range of ways

E.g. a study in 2023 found:

- many experience hyper-empathy
- some experience low empathy
- some experience empathy but find it difficult to understand or express

"Every time we tell an autistic child to 'use a respectful tone,' we are altering their inherent way of communicating. When we misidentify their stimming as a 'barrier' to learning, we are disregarding the ways in which they move their bodies to regulate and learn."

Through the pairing procedure, children begin to learn that doing things that feel good to them (e.g. autistic play, stimming, etc.) are less valuable than the things that make the therapist feel good...

A friend drove two hours today for her breast cancer chemotherapy only to learn it was canceled due to NIH cuts. Clinical trial ended midstream. No treatment, no restart, no plan, no information. Her bro-in-law's chemo was also canceled.

Sometimes I worry I might be an annoying ass.

Other times I see someone post asking us to name an odd movie for them to watch and I comment: 61*, Seven, Thirteen, 2001 and 1917.

Many will rightly share "Killing Me Softly," but I really love this song. RIP, Ms. Flack, and thank you.

I always thought Wallace Shawn had the ideal career: you get to be this well-regarded highbrow playwright and art house movie maker

AND you also get to be a part of millions of people‘s childhoods by being in Clueless, the Princess Bride, and Toy Story. What a life.

Apparently the way to get journalists to pretend your hack shop is a serious scholarly institution is to threaten them with “war,” as serious scholarly institutions routinely do.

I'm seeing "win or go home" pop up with these football semifinals tonight. No matter who wins, all four teams will go home afterward. Even the Texas Longhorns, playing in Arlington, will return to Austin if they win.

TLDR: "Win or go home" annoys me to an irrational degree.

"Why is it that actively training autistic and wider-neurodivergent children & young people to people-please in exchange for conditional inclusion (but not necessarily acceptance) is still considered 'best practice' by professionals and parents?" Alternatives here:

Good insight in only three posts.
Smallpox was a devastating illness, but it was also vulnerable to human ingenuity because:

1. It only infected people...it couldn't hide in animals.
2. It's a DNA virus, which makes its genome much more stable, and its mutation rate slower.
3. It was very clear when someone had smallpox.

Private company buys a public good. A few years go by and the company decides the public good is no longer worthwhile; the public suffers as a result.

This story arc is way too common in modern society.

I’ve said this before, but my dad lost 4 siblings to polio & smallpox before the age of 10. They would be here today if they had access to vaccines. I wish we could trade those antivaxxers for my aunts & uncles.
As an Indian, my contempt for (rich white) anti-vaxxers in the west is so deep I often cannot quite find the words to express my contempt.
I grew up seeing polio-disabled children and adults crawling over rubble and roads in India.
My father worked for the Pulse Polio program.
What is happening?
POLIO?!

that was not on my 'worst case scenario' bingo card
