I see some other people doing ongoing threads of stuff they listen to or have read; seems like a good thing, share knowledge of good stuff and enjoyment of what’s out there. Here’s something I’ve just finished:

Imagine the public information film the COI could have made about this in the 1970s.

It would have been legendary.
There is a post circulating on Bluesky encouraging the moving of a frozen turkey straight into a pot of hot oil. We are combating this misinformation the best way we know how - through the power of dance music.

Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

The other thing about ‘finding names difficult’ is that it is incredibly culturally relative. I had a colleague called Vaughan - perfectly normal name here in the UK, incredibly outlandish in the US I seem to recall, and definitely unpronounceable in Spain (where it always ended up as ‘Bond’).
"I'm half Japanese, half white, but both sides lived in Hawai’i for 3 plus generations. My name is Kau’i. It looks daunting but it’s just Ka-ooh-ee."

But when Ms White read out her name, she tripped up on the name and Kau’i corrected her pronunciation. Ms White said: "I'll call you Katherine".

There are some truly unhinged bits in the piece about Glasman, as to be expected when dealing with Glasman, but seriously what the actual? That's...one hell of a conflation of terminology.

Start at the top of this good thread about toilet policing + stats
This is exacerbated by the the fact that passing, undetected, trans women will probably be a larger portion of those who continue to use the ladies.

Anyway thanks for reading all this

Really good post about the difference between complexity in an underlying system and the cognitive load faced by users, with reference to UK rail but applies far more broadly www.freewheeling.info/blog/complex...
Complexity isn’t the issue with train fares — Freewheeling
There is a consensus that rail fares are too complex. There is a lot of truth to this but it’s nuanced. It’s very important we understand this nuance otherwise we’re in danger of fixing the wrong th...

Another thought on this: it is quite interesting to have rewatched all of Buffy with a teen over the past year or two. The youth viewpoint is very clearly that there were a whole lot of story decisions that were bad and, yes, mean-spirited (we heard the teen many times blame JW directly)
Different strokes for different folks, but the only artist I cannot separate the art from the artist on is Joss Whedon, I think because the underlying problem with what I find disappointing about Buffy is...this would be more satisfying if the show weren't quite so mean-spirited?

There are plenty of links between the anti-trans “women’s rights” movement & anti-feminist conservatism. And opposing abortion is a logical conclusion for a movement that says no, you should not have agency over your own body; no, you do not know best about yourself; no, you have no choice.
No way I’m sharing Stock’s UnHerd article. But I am going to point to this bit which amply demonstrates the anti-trans=>anti-women’s rights pipeline. “Abortions should only be done for a highly restricted set of reasons. They should not be just nodded through for any reason a pregnant woman likes.”

I mean I think there is something to this, but at the same time, there are so many great moments even so. There are things I can never forgive Whedon for, but actually, you know what, the ending of S7 and how it pans out for the Potentials I like a lot.

I don’t think Danny Kruger is being taken seriously enough - this is far more extreme than anything the Conservatives were allowed to get away with. He is effectively saying that being anti-racist and being trans are contrary to British national identity and his party is leading the polls.
Reform are so dangerous and this headline doesn’t do it justice. I also think a piece like this should start with the politician‘s core views just to emphasise the urgency.

What many politicians don't realise - or want to understand - is that many of the "highly-skilled" immigrants whose labour they crave were raised by the same asylum seekers and refugees they openly despise. They take the racist political rhetoric personally, and act accordingly. Why wouldn't they?
"Record numbers of overseas-trained doctors are quitting the UK, leaving the NHS at risk of huge gaps in its workforce, with hostility towards migrants blamed for the exodus...the NHS is so heavily reliant on doctors from elsewhere – 42% of its entire medical workforce qualified overseas."
All those people, including current government, who falsely claim migrants are to blame for failings with the NHS, along with infrastructure in general, are in for one hell of a shock with how much worse things will get with Labour's anti-immigration policies.
