Yes, I think this is what the “it’s smart not to do income tax” stuff is missing. If you remove salary sacrifice on someone’s pension contributions you are increasing their income tax! If you freeze thresholds you are increasing their income tax!
Issue for Labour now isn't whether they break their manifesto pledge on tax. It is whether they do so in a way which is blatant, honest but sustainable - or whether they do so by a myriad of complex and likely insufficient means whilst arguing they are not.

Imho, one seems more toxic than the other

The James Bond franchise faces a big problem: me, the viewer, has been shot at the start of the movie through the barrel of my gun, and I'm dripping blood over my own eye balls (they're in the gun)

This does rather betray that Reform’s ultimate plan is to steal the chaos emeralds.

The new Apes movies are all quietly pretty good (though I’m weird and like the first and last ones most).
The bairn came back from her friend’s house while we were watching Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and was hooked by it. She just watched Rise and is going absolutely daft for it. She’s seven.

I saw it on the big screen ~two weeks ago so I’d just like to take the opportunity to say I came by my “I don’t get the big deal” honestly.
Frankenstein is available to stream on Netflix today, so expect a bunch of “I don’t get the big deal” takes from people uninterested in the movie who half-watched it on their phones.

I do fondly remember people getting inordinately angry at Tony Leung being referred to as “a Marvel actor”.
Being an actor is wild. You can be one of the great literary polymaths of the 20th century, but you do one walk-on role on a network sitcom where your only line is, “Ey, who’s cookin’ boigas in da bathroom?” and for the rest of your life you’re “the boiga guy” to everyone except, like, Terry Gross.
On the other site, an 18-year-old Zohran canvasser described the legendary Wallace Shawn as "the actor who plays Dr. Sturgis on Young Sheldon" which is honestly adorable

This whole thread is delightful.
Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back!

Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary.

Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

there is no debate to be had about integration in the UK. The debate should be about what we do about the way we indulge delusional people by pretending their arguments are not bad faith.

Our November programme has landed - and it’s one of our biggest yet. Over 150 films fill both our screens this month, from autumnal favourites and rediscovered gems to cult deep cuts and 70mm epics. Expect the kind of eclectic mix that makes the PCC what it is.

This reminds me of the fond memory of me and the man who went on to be the best man at my wedding (because of this moment?) having to sit in the dark for a few minutes after Fast and Furious 7 because we were both quietly weeping.
Just realised that *I* am someone’s cinema weirdo story, because the day we sold our flat, went to the movies, and I started weeping, proper Julia Stevenson in Truly Madly Deeply levels of tears at the Foxton’s advert.
Oh come on, God forbid you chat instead of paying rapt attention for why you should Get Into Teaching

It’s been… well, since release that I’ve seen this. I’m due a rewatch.
My wife is Chilean and there are lots of parallels to the referendum on Pinochet where he was defeated. The pro-Pinochet ads were doom and gloom. The anti were upbeat and sunny. There was a movie about it: youtu.be/lt8VayTqQhQ?...

The reason this doesn’t track isn’t *just* because it’s a misreading of Tolkien. Robinson isn’t a ‘hard man’ - like Musk, he’s a shit-stirring little weasel. He’s Gríma Wormtongue.

They’ve got to finesse the message in case they accidentally imply immigrants are people worthy of dignity or respect or that their own voters have opinions worth listening to.
Worth saying that despite asking for more than 12 hours we’ve had nothing back from Labour on this

Given Lam's appalling comments, the UK government needs to make it free for those with permanent leave to remain to obtain British citizenship, to promote people making the change, and to make it quicker.

They need to do that to remove understandable anxiety.
