The second bit is an early novel of Butler’s that I’m lucky enough to have a copy of (she thought it was bad and refused permission for it to be republished). It’s called Survivor and it’s not at all bad, though you could reasonably see it as a minor novel. Obviously the cover is pulpy as hell.

One more thing I’ve just finished (or actually two, but they go together). I stumbled across this as part of my work: a scholarly study by US academic Chi-Ming Yang of Octavia E Butler’s works, categorized in alphabetical sections (hence H is for Horse).

Day five, and the last day of my #CongestionChargeWatch here in East Oxford. 7 am on Friday 7 November and it was an entirely empty street as I snapped it; about a minute or two later a number 10 bus came past but that was all.

Oh ho! literally the first time I have caught a queue of traffic. It’s still a queue now, a few minutes later after the crossing light has gone off; maybe some blockage at the Cowley Road junction but if so that’s the first one I’ve seen this week. This would be much more the normal sight, usually.

8:00 and a light stream of cars. I didn’t have to wait to catch some activity but it’s all free flowing.

Day 4 of #CongestionChargeWatch on Hollow Way. Tomorrow will be the last day I’ll do this, I got complacent already today and forgot to think about it at 7am. This one’s about 7:30; I had stepped out a few minutes earlier and heard what sounded like a few cars whizzing past but didn’t see how many.

Day 4 of #CongestionChargeWatch on Hollow Way. Tomorrow will be the last day I’ll do this, I got complacent already today and forgot to think about it at 7am. This one’s about 7:30; I had stepped out a few minutes earlier and heard what sounded like a few cars whizzing past but didn’t see how many.
Last one for today I think. The 8:30 photo is the busiest of the day so far; I also just missed getting a 700 bus in shot, which I’m still quite excited to see as it’s a very new route and it’s really great to see new routes which have come along.

8 am and I am feeling there’s not much mileage in this series of snapshots as it’s all very samey… but a series that doesn’t vary much still tells us something.

Day 3 of #CongestionChargeWatch on Hollow Way. Very similar to the last couple of days as far as I could tell - low traffic not no traffic, all pretty calm.

Last one for me today: just before 9 am when the charging stops for the morning. I’ve been hearing cars and a few buses whizzing past, and a couple of times the pedestrians have pushed the crossing button, but this time I only caught two bikes and a scooter in the shot.

8:00 am; more regular traffic but all flowing freely, a few pedestrians about. Sometimes people can just cross the road without waiting, other times people have pressed the button for the crossing.

I lied, one more photo as we approach the cutoff of 9 am. Slightly busier in that I did see one car waiting to pass the van parked on the on street parking (which they shouldn’t actually use until 9:30 am) and a couple of bikes, plus the start of the driving instruction sessions for the day.

First Monday of the congestion charge here in Oxf: Hollow Way is seeing clear roads with a smallish amount of free flowing traffic, no stationary cars queuing to get to the junction of Hollow Way with Cowley Road. Last week the charge started during half term, today it’s a school day.
