And we knew this. This wasn't speculation. We studied it, we had the talking points. We trained volunteers to explain this to people. It's not a surprise. Rich people don't flee places with good quality of life when we increase the quality of life. They might try to cheat us, but they don't leave.
NEW: The first two years of Massachusetts' millionaire tax has raised $3 billion more than expected.

And rather than driving the rich away, IPS researchers found that the number of millionaires has *increased.*

Tax the rich. Greg Ryan in @bloomberg.com:
Millionaire Tax That Inspired Mamdani Fuels $5.7 Billion Haul in Massachusetts
A millionaire levy in Massachusetts that New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani holds up as a model for taxing the rich has generated $3 billion more in revenue than expected without forcing...

Absolute nonsense. Anyone who lived through the period, or who has studied the period, will know how daft, how dangerously silly, this kind of rot is. If I may, I was there. It was FAR more grey, tough, poor, bigoted, boring, terrifying, violent & frequently flat-out insane than nostalgia insists.

Some days, I have trouble reading the news because it causes in me a wave of existential nausea and depression. (It’s OK, I have tools to combat that, and:) I’m reminded of Ben Ferencz’ great advice on that (see below): “Never give up, never give up, never give up.”
That new Nuremberg film is out, so thought I’d repost this #graphicrecording I did in 2017 of Ben Ferencz, Chief Prosecutor of the Nuremberg Trials at a #TeenVogue #TedTeen event in NYC. At the age he then was, 99, he spoke “with sorrow and with hope” and with extraordinary, passionate eloquence.

Incisive analysis from Dorian Lynskey on the deplorable state of affairs currently engulfing the BBC and the hypocrisy of the likes of Robbie Gibb and his minions.

The idea that this individual is somehow an “impartiality tzar” who supports unbiased journalism is absurd and utterly despicable.

A lot of talk in my timeline about the #BBC. Yeah, me too. Really fucked off about this. You have most of the UK media in the grip of frothing far-right madness, ITV in talks with Comcast, the BBC holed beneath its waterline of integrity. Thought Brexit was a bad idea? This is up there with it.

The BBC, both as a radio broadcaster, and a TV broadcaster, didn’t start out doing news at all. News is the upstart department. Its job is to act as a national fireplace. And that’s properly vital now, more than ever.
I reckon a shared national popular culture is just as important (if not more important) than a fact based, impartial news service for liberal democracy to work.
