My non-cynical take is that the GOP had a credible commitment to end SNAP, the ACA in total, increasing RIFs, etc., and the Dems only option other than to let people suffer was to choose who would fall on the sword.

No matter how cynical you are, you aren't cynical enough
Any Democratic senator, at any moment, could've derailed this by calling for Schumer's replacement and casting their colleagues as MAGA collaborators, thereby shifting the Overton window. But they're all in on it. This was always a team effort.

Chris Murphy: "There will be pretty substantial damage to a Dem brand that has been rehabilitated if on the heels of an election in which the people told us to keep fighting, we immediately stop... if we surrender without having gotten anything, I worry it'll be hard to get them back up off the mat"

BASH: You all found ways to pay the military and WIC. But why are you drawing the line now on 40 million Americans who literally will not be able to eat with govt assistance?
MIKE JOHNSON: If we had a contingency fund we could use, that would be done.

Bsky gloats about Milei, but if you read about it, it is more subtle and not quite what people here think. His reforms require commitment and seemed to be working. He has the commitment, but voters don't and the likely outcome is another failed attempt to reform out of Argentina's permanent crisis

To be clear here: we are seeing moderate inflation and interest rates, a tech led boom with tight labor markets, and high debt levels. We've crammed all the worst parts of stagflation, the dot-com bubble, and the pre-great recession periods into one.
I mean, I’m a practicing economist, and at this point I’m telling people that we’ve never really had any economy anywhere subject to these current conditions. We genuinely have never seen this before and don’t know for sure what will happen.
But I don’t think it’s gonna be good. Question is degree.
But I don’t think it’s gonna be good. Question is degree.
Pretty big divergence between what the Politics Knowers think is happening to the economy and what Economy Knowers say is happening to the economy.
I find that gap troubling. Keep your expectations in check, folks.

Feel I need to re-up this based on recent events. No one is quicker to deny believing in certain dogma than Catholic posters in order to maintain some level of sophistication in the eyes of everyone else on here.
One of the interesting things about Catholic poasters is that you get the feeling that no one else would want their religion/denomination to be a different religion/denomination more than them

I am currently reading Walter Ong’s Orality and Literacy, first published 43 years ago, and it’s giving me more insight into the a-literate [sic] mind of Donald Trump and current American culture than anything I’ve read in a very long time. Perhaps ever. The resonances and parallels are striking.
