Let’s be honest. Does anyone think that this president would honour Article Five? Presence of US military & nuclear sharing still has value to Europe, but its deterrent value is significantly reduced & falling. This is reckless, dangerous behaviour by the Trump administration.

I will be pissed at so many people for the rest of my fucking life about the way the Afghan withdrawl was covered. Congratulations, the next dozen presidents were watching and you have made the incentives very clear: we will never end a war again
There's a hypothesis that the backlash to the Afghanistan withdrawal led to the Biden admin becoming deathly afraid of alterations to the status quo even when the new status quo was fundamentally untenable for ideological or moral reasons
i recognize there were some major wins--e.g. AUKUS--but on ukraine and gaza specifically, whatever the hell he was doing wasn't working

The thing is, what else is he supposed to do here? I mean, the military isn't obligated to just accept attempts to undermine democratic norms either. The Wehrmacht model of holding itself loftily above the political fray wasn't exactly successful, historically speaking.
General Milley was still on active duty as Chairman when he sought out Woodward to make these statements. That seems to me a bad look for civ-mil. I'd be interested in what other civ-mil experts think.
