Seems like a good day to revisit why I chose this screen name a little over seven years ago. A 🧵

It was about a week after Jamal Khashoggi was murdered, and the first time (that I know of) that Trump was asked about it.

What a shocking waste of opportunity this government has proved to be.
It has squandered its time and attention on ridiculous fiscal rules, persecuting refugees and trashing ecosystems in the name of growth, while failing to deliver what we so desperately want.

Still thinking about @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social’s opening speech at the @theunion.org conference on TB

“Poverty is expensive. Food is medicine”

John totally gets what many don’t - TB is not just a medical problem, it is the quintessential biososcial problem that needs bio social solutions

What we desperately need is more politicians speaking to our common interests-reducing vast income gaps, investing in public services (esp health, education, social care, etc), investing in housing, bringing down cost of living. People are distraught and angry
#BBCPM reporting that more Brits have become anti immigration according to polls.
Is it bloody surprising when so much of the written & social media run by neocon shitehawks & political charlatans have demonised vulnerable groups for decades, pumping out their BS unchallenged by Prog politicians?!

#Butterflies Who else is rightly pissed off with the ongoing UK direction of travel since the Brexit clusterfuck?

When the hell are we going to put Party Politics aside & unite the more Progressive majority to achieve a better future.

When will we truly #DumpTrump Foil #Farage & Exit #Brexit?

We all need to do our bit to dampen down the hate across all countries, including drowning out hateful rhetoric. In the UK there is much to do, including ensuring the hate mongers don’t gain even more power - first step hopenothate.org.uk/are-you-a-never-nigel/

Appropriate indeed as ICE is now imitating Gestapo tactics and those of the German army in Poland in WW2 called Lapanka (look it up). ICE actions go against all US values I grew up with there. May all those leading ICE and participating face justice for their crimes against US residents.
Using the term “Midway Blitz,” for its Chicago immigration operation that has its origins in Nazi-era devastation, was a telling choice for the Trump regime—which is known for its white nationalist tropes and aggressive tactics on civilians. Jen Rubin on Trump's war on Chicago.

Temporary UK asylum/ refugee status, reviews every 2.5 years, 20 years to secure permanent status, forced return of families if government deems it "safe". Given that the Tories mandated Rwanda "safe" forever, by law, that's implausible.

Mahmood and Starmer should haemorrhage voter support for this

I can and can’t fathom how people don’t know about Britain’s role with enslaving people. I guess it’s not taught here in schools in much depth, and Brits seem to assume that because there were few enslaved peoples here in the UK it wasn’t a big deal, ignoring the vast wealth gained thru slavery
holy shit: “Among the 2,000 UK adults surveyed, 85% were unaware that Britain forcibly transported more than 3 million Africans to the Caribbean, 89% did not know that Britain enslaved people in the Caribbean for more than 300 years” www.theguardian.com/world/2025/n...

The US is the only industrialized country that treats healthcare like a commodity & not a necessity, and it's costing Americans their health & lives.

All Americans should have access to the healthcare they need without going into medical debt because they needed medical care.

To be clear: Trump is only calling for the GOP to release the Epstein files because he was told he’s about to lose 150+ republicans on this vote.

I’ll wait to see if this is actually announced. But if so… please can the PLP rise up. You owe it to your consciences, your voters, and the institution that is the Labour Party.
The Sun has been told Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will on Monday propose confiscating jewellery, watches, necklaces from asylum seekers to meet asylum costs

This reflects the most controversial aspect of the Danish scheme - the Jewellery Law. The toughest Labour MPs thought this was OTT

AI is coming for your job.
Do something AI can't do.
To my students: Lean into skills AI amplifies, not ones it bulldozes. Frame good questions, scope problems, interpret messy data, apply judgment, explain clearly. The bot can autocomplete; you bring curiosity, context, and ethics.
November 17, 2025 at 7:22 AM
I hope every Labour MP considering whether to support Shabana Mahmood's asylum plans remembers Nigel Farage's assessment that the “Home Secretary sounds like a Reform supporter.”

If they support them they will too.

I honestly think anyone who has been home secretary this century should be barred from being PM. The moral compromise and performative cruelty that has been part of the job description erodes the decency vital to provide values based leadership. It corrupts politicians brains.

Yes, seen all those people wading across the Rio Grande or crossing the Sonora with their sick cattle, herded from who knows where. Seriously? Far more chance of US beef being infected due to poor biosecurity inside the US, and cuts to animal health survellance budgets.
They’re bringing in their own diseased cattle so they don’t have to keep eating the cats and the dogs. 🥴

Every time I hear a politician say that an issue is “dividing” this country they always then come down on the side of the right wing view of it. Just once I’d love to hear someone say “this issue is divisive, which is why I’m making the argument that kindness and compassion is important”
