Just to say, if you know someone parenting a kid alone, especially a small one, see if you can buy a present that the kid can give to their parent. Even take the kid shopping so they can choose. It's not even about the money - the parent might happily pay for someone else to do this kindness.

An old military maxim often attributed to Napoleon is “an army marches on its stomach” and I feel the same way that a university thinks via its library. The slow and steady financial diminution of research libraries and the librarians who staff them is, to me, a slow-rolling higher Ed catastrophe.

Sometimes I think about how much art never gets made because the entire country tied health insurance to having a job but mostly I try not to drive myself crazy.

About today's public transit discourse: I believe that riding public transit is a spiritual good for increasing your empathy and practicing minding your own business. It also helps you internalize that most people mind their own business, e.g. no one is looking at you.

There's something deeply concerning about the loss of a major art and craft store and the liquidation of a sewing pattern company. We are actively watching the ability to make things by hand become harder and harder, more out of reach.

Can you get indie? Sure. But that's a privilege, too.

Another day, another barrage of news about how AI developers are getting billions of dollars for vaporware while NSF, NOAA and NASA are defunded.

Part of my skepticism towards genAI in academia is personal bitterness about how some are willing to throw an amount of money, energy, and support at the AI hype while treating the humans pushed out of academia (esp. grad students, adjuncts, and postdocs) as an unfortunate inevitability.

NB: Browsing works because actual human librarians take the time to categorize materials so that like things live together on the shelves. It's. not. magic. it. is. professional. labor.
Yesterday I went to the library to borrow a book I've bought but wanted to start reading before it arrives, and wound up checking out two others shelved nearby.

This is why browsing is so much better than algorithms. Browsing lets you survey and spark.

every librarian I know is doing six jobs at once

they should get paid like professional athletes
Everyone wants to talk about how great libraries are but no one wants to talk about compensating and supporting said librarians

Hey, did you know there's an alternative to ChatGPT that makes sense economically and doesn't destroy the environment?
It's called English majors and they will happily fix all of your documents for the low price of health insurance and a living wage.

I saw a version of this on here before but it's worth yelling: these institutions that Musk is illegally dismantling– the weather service, health system, climate & energy research, international aid, maybe the US mail(?)– they don't belong to him, they belong to us. We invested in them. They're ours

Early Intervention was incredibly important for my micropreemie and our family—just life-changing, irreplaceable, long-lasting effects. I am certain that her whole life will be easier and happier because we received that free, multi-faceted, accessible help her first three years.
Something I haven't seen covered extensively with regards to the Department of Education is the fact that the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) funds early intervention services, along with Medicaid. EI is usually free, or very low cost for families.

Slashing the U.S. Department of Education, Medicaid, and more hurts young children with delays and disabilities.

Very fine and normal to be living in times when the US president is openly agitating for war with Canada. ANY talk of "51st state" means talking about war. Don't sugarcoat or sane-wash it. He's talking about war. With a peaceful neighbour and NATO ally.
