i can't help but think that october 7 and the response thereto really put the final nail in the "rules based international order" - by totally capitulating to the express and overt idea that "international law is fake," western states let the fig leaf fall and in so doing left themselves exposed

This is it. The elites are the media and Congress and Governors and Mayors. And everyone in those positions are weak yappers, do nothing empty politicians and scared losers pushing out Republican press releases as reporting. Trump knows it.
at some point you have to see it as a psychological issue. the people who run this country are cowards. the media who reports on them are cowards. they have never been able to face what is happening, they are committed to a project of persuasion: pretend everything is fine and it magically will be!
The president is a mad king threatening war against America’s closest allies because he’s got a psychological fixation on an empty frozen island and a Nobel Peace Prize snub and the best the media or opposition can manage is “Trump changes America’s priorities, perhaps for the worse”

You’re gonna see so many columns in the UK press deducing Starmer’s master strategy but the truth is Europe let Gaza, Iran, Venezuela etc. happen because they wanted it, now the beast is coming for them, the EU has just enough clout to respond as a bloc but the UK is out in the cold and fucked.

I remember playing D&D with some randos when I was about 16 and one of the guys was this tedious, half-smart, shameless little rules-lawyer who ground every scene to a halt to eke out some marginal, usually pointless advantage. I remember thinking clear as day, "this sort of person runs the world."

Society parried the ozone layer, acid rain, and Y2K back to back and instead of going "wow, parrying is badass" a lot of people went "society didn't even get hit so I guess there's no need to learn how to parry" and instantly took a thousand hits
we live in a sick society that thinks preventing problems is a waste of time and effort and hey, guess why everything sucks now
