It is objectively funny that Nate Silver, the platonic ideal version of the pudgy, dweeby nerd, has gone all-in on pretending he's some kind of gruff, jock uber-mensch

This is legit fascinating and answers some questions I had during lockdown.
Acute and chronic viral infections, including Herpes Zoster (Shingles), Hepatitis C, HIV, CMV, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2, are linked with a substantial increased risk of cardiovascular events, from a systematic review. Figure for SARS-CoV-2 below

you know we used to have to do at least a little work to prove the connection between racism and transphobia
Nothing illustrates the arseholery of the IOC and the British Press more than the use of the image of a not-Trans woman to illustrate a story about trans women being banned (because there are no current trans women competing at this level)

Having read the double helix I absolutely do not buy this for a second. Seems a lot more like "I'm a mischievous Puck" was post-facto dissembling when people rightly pointed out he'd (accurately) written himself up as an arrogant dick. Arrogance not being a synonym for mischievous after all
His next book, The Double Helix, is NOT a straight-faced memoir. He portrayed himself as snarky, lazy, oversexed, and dishonest, for laughs and to show students that science could be mischievous, playful, fun. It worked. In my book, I trace key passages through multiple drafts.

Losing all this will be the BBC's own fault. I won't shed much of a tear for such an insidiously reactionary organisation
There are many subtle and complex arguments one can have about the future of the BBC — but I guarantee you that no other channel or streaming service will be as committed to factual programming, children’s education, history shows, religious discussion, poetry, arts, or state of the nation debate

James watson: “Anyone sincerely interested in understanding the imbalance in the representation of men and women in science must reasonably be prepared at least to consider the extent to which nature may figure, even with the clear evidence that nurture is strongly implicated.”
Watson was sexist in an old-fashioned, paternalistic sense. Patronizingly, he loved pretty girls for the "sparkle" they added to life. But he took women intellectuals, esp scientists, as seriously as men. Unlike Crick, he never harassed women and never cheated on his wife.

What bothers me is that impartiality and balance are two different and incompatible things. Impartiality means that you don't intervene to put your thumb on the scales. Balance necessarily requires that you intervene to artificially make every issue look like a 50/50.

So the BBC is about to get much worse. BBC News gets 1.2 billion visits a month. I don’t think that level of spreading far right bullshit paid for by us is worth Doctor Who, local news (which is good for London) and CBeebies sorry

Every car you see in a major city is a policy failure. We should have enough public transport with good accessibility that all of this is null.
But this absolutely isn't necessary. Again, zone 2 London. These people are just selfish.

The BBC is and always has been institutionally biased in favour of privilege and the status quo, it’s in the DNA of any state broadcaster which exists at the whim of politicians. You just have to look at the makeup of the Board there. People should stop pretending the BBC is neutral, that is a myth.

I love how The Labour Party, of all things, cannot conceptually imagine the idea of, say, the government giving councils money to build council housing.
Surely there are some better arguments on the pro landlordism side of the debate than implying that if a landlord doesn't own the house, the house ceases to exist??
