This is Meatball. He's going home for the very first time. So excited to have a human of his own. Thinking about what he's going to call you. Maybe Bob. 12/10

Generative “AI” is a plagiarism machine and copyright infringement engine. Instead of forcing WGA and SAG-AFTRA to strike for months in hopes they could use AI to replace us, studios should be working *with* us to sue the living shit out of these thieves. spectrum.ieee.org/midjourney-c...

One thing that does shake it up is when a formerly middle-class white person falls on hard times and you (by which I mean me, the guy who works at the welfare office) have to have the "that's all there is" conversation with them.

That's a real bummer of a conversation.
Again the most popular conspiracy theory in America is that there exists some separate, generous welfare state for non-whites/non-americans. It’s sometimes impossible to shake. A real foundational belief for millions of people.
Although we already had a test case for this, the kind of government benefits snarlingly referred to as “welfare” haven’t existed for 30 years but people still talk about them like a guaranteed basic income

Ten years ago today, with Alzheimers descending on her, my mother left the home she had lived in for 40 plus years. Being who she was, she wasn't going until she'd hoovered every last inch, and I snapped this photo.

With the passage of time, it's taken on an almost unbearable poignancy.

Other things you can do for your vet (and cat!):
- be on time for appointments
- be gracious if they are running late
- trim cat nails before appointments if you can
- bring your cat in for regular exams if you can, not just sick visits and emergencies
In a few days it will be the one year anniversary of our vets going above and beyond to help Fergus when he had big tumor on his leg, so I'll be sending them a thank you note to commemorate. Please let your vet(s) and their staff know if you appreciate them! ❤️ www.bbc.com/worklife/art...
The acute suicide crisis among veterinarians: 'You're always going to be failing somebody'
Suicide rates among veterinarians are staggering. The crisis is dire – but there may be hope in sight.

on this the day of nicolas cage’s birth, please enjoy with me the following delightful fact:

there’s an online database of bacteriophages that anyone can submit to, and their _very first_ naming rule is “do not name your phage after nicolas cage.”

Just overheard a sweet and ardent conversation between some college kids where one was explaining that you can make a bunch of drawings on a pad and flip through it to make it appear to move.
Another replied, "When you think about it, that's all animation really is."
Adorable and bewildering. 10/10

A report from the ground that COVID is spreading rapidly in Gaza. Gaza is a public health crisis. We need a ceasefire now, and world leaders to stop denying that the pandemic is still going.
