More than any time since the 1980s, perhaps ever, the BBC needs a journalistic warrior to lead it. Someone who can see the shape of a fight coming and work out how to win it and have the will to do so. Davie was never that guy. It can't be a hack from the queue. Maybe it should be a refugee from CBS

Its decision to leave the Tory appointees in post at the BBC is one of so many Labour have made that I can't begin to understand. Any guesses?

“Even for Donald Trump, this was not normal. It was not normal for the UN General Assembly. It was not usual for any world leader, elected or not – dictators usually take decades to lose contact with reality in the way Trump appeared to have done today.”

The ultimate irony is that after trashing Biden, he celebrated that America was now respected around the world, no longer a laughing stock. He genuinely doesn’t see how absurd he sounds. His ego is so vast he cannot conceive that the world is laughing at him. 🧵

Well, I made myself listen to Trump’s speech in full. While full of boasts, distortions, disgusting attacks on Biden, weird asides about the mayor of London, National Guard in DC, his MAGA hat, and unsubtle hints about wanting the peace prize - there WERE some hard uncomfortable points there too 🧵
Vain, stupid, bigoted, shallow, crass, ignorant, and so, so unqualified, in every way. America’s shame and humiliation on the world stage, for everyone to see. Russia, China, Iran etc must be quietly pinching themselves at this man’s sabotage of America; victims of oppression worldwide in despair.
Trump: "I'm really good at predicting things. During the campaign they had a hat -- a best-selling hat -- 'Trump was right about everything.' And I don't say that in a braggadocios way, but it's true. I've been right about everything."

And also on Friday, two Russian aircraft buzzed a Polish oil platform in the Baltic. I’m sensing a pattern. If NATO doesn’t make the Russians take them seriously, intrusions will grow more dangerous. They need to be told if they enter NATO airspace, they will be shot down - & we have to mean it.

These are people who know what they're talking about, first hand. No-one should count on Putin's Russia relinquishing its grip on occupied parts of Ukraine if the West now accepts Russian conquests 'de facto but not de jure' .
Op-ed from the foreign ministers of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, arguing that any territorial swaps with Russia won’t be temporary: “To entertain the idea of trading land for a fragile truce is to repeat the mistakes of the past — and to invite history’s darkest chapters to be repeated.”
Baltic states know Russian occupation is never temporary
Land swaps and de facto annexation in Ukraine won’t bring peace and could lead to decades of brutal subjugation

The financial economy is immersed in the kind of wild gambling we saw leading up to the 2008 financial crisis.

We’re seeing it all over again — this time with crypto, meme stocks, junk bonds, and investors pumping up shares of AI stocks without knowing what it is.

Be warned.

I want EU citizens' freedom of movement back.
And I'll happily take Schengen & the Euro to make that happen.

Because governments make better decisions when every voice is heard.
