I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

New! Cassetteboy vs Keir Starmer.

This took absolutely ages, so if you'd like to buy us a coffee at ko-fi.com/cassetteboy we'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Current theory: Keir Starmer doesn't understand what the phrase "I have full confidence in [thing/person]". (Currently 2 for 2, anyway)

So if on Wednesday, at PMQs, he's asked if he has confidence in his position and answers with that he does, he will be gone by Thursday lunchtime.

Hi authors! Please remember to file a claim!
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

the nascent internet's most exciting thing was the possibility of a single repository of total human knowledge, for me to look up whenever I want. AI is an abomination because it will show you something you've never seen before, and you think you know more about the world, but you only know a lie

the final insult of AI is going to be forcing us all to become linux guys. we're all going to be like oh yeah downloading stuff on linux is super easy you just juice the tarball and compile the pulp in the sudo command line. not like windows where you have to click on things

Worth remembering that Terence Stamp was the son of a ship's stoker.

Stamp desperately wanted to act, after falling in love with movies as a kid, and it was a scholarship to Drama School that allowed him to walk that path.

Every time arts cuts are made, they rob us of more Terence Stamps.

I do firmly believe that refusing to outsource your basic cognitive functions to LLMs right now - as so many are stumbling over themselves to do right now, like hogs trotting to a pile of slop that’s been set up inside of a butcher’s delivery truck - will very much pay off in a few years.

I think Ai chatbots passing the Turing test is impressive, in the same way that a magician passing a coin through a solid oak table is impressive. But the thing is, magicians can't actually pass coins through tables; their skill is in making it seem that they can.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

common misconception—it’s not that our houses are built to keep heat in (anyone who’s endured a British winter can tell you that). no, the reason hot days are so unbearable in the UK is because this is an evil country and we are being given a small taste of the fire that awaits us in the afterlife
