Bari’s complaint was “there’s nothing new here” and while that’s untrue it’s also irrelevant

“we intentionally sent people to be tortured in a hellhole and bragged about it and The Hague is too good for everyone involved” is a story that simply cannot be told enough

99% of rpg zines and books should have page numbers.

And that's just the start. There's actually a lot of technique and intentionality behind things like page numbers, running headers, etc.

Let me know what you think!

This little bit of snark spiralled into a little history thread about different scenes in early TTRPGs, as best I understand it.
It's hard to believe that it's only been ten years since UCLA English Lit grad Lee Gold launched her influential zine Alarums & Excursions (named after Elizabethan drama). Its hard to believe, as it's actually 50 years, as it launched in 1975, and she only wrapped it this year.
I cannot express how pathetic you have to be to believe this happened in the TTRPG hobby in the last decade

What i love(!) about these dumbass AI videos is how they cannot keep a shot for longer than 2 seconds. Like AI-induced psychosis, it seems like they’re trying to engineer epilepsy crises too.
McDonald's has released an AI-generated Christmas ad

The studio behind it says they 'hardly slept' for several weeks while writing AI prompts and refining the shots — 'AI didn't make this film. We did'

It’s extremely weird that housing is seen as an investment in the USA which does, in fact, have a healthy(?) financial market. Doubly so when avg building quality (cardboard walls etc) should mean a fast-depreciating “asset”
And the reason why they block new housing is because they treat houses as investment and not necessity commodities.

We're going to have to come up with a policy that discourages that practice, and, well, good luck. It would upend the idea of economy as we know it.

Meta lost $77 billion on this metaverse folly. For perspective, Netflix’s winning bid for the entire Warner Bros studio and its subsidiaries, the IP, the facilities, and all those assets was $82.7 billion.

For Meta, that’s “oops, back to the drawing board” money.
Meta Platforms is planning cuts to the metaverse—an arena Mark Zuckerberg once called the future of the company—and will shift spending to AI wearables.

Curious question: i know most people see #Robocop as satire but i can’t catch it. Yes, i’m aware of hyper-violence, privatization of security etc but here’s what i don’t understand: if one were to make a movie that 100% buys into those ideas in 1987, how would it differ from the movie we got?

Assuming there isn’t more to this than we know, it is indeed very embarrassing to see an industry obsessed with being taken seriously as an art form self censor in this way.

You need the grit if you want the pearl, dweebs. No amount of trotting out auteur film directors on stage offsets that need
Despite the controversy, Horses is only shocking if you're unfamiliar with the history movies, theater, literature, or basically any art form that does not have stats. aftermath.site/horses-indie-g...
Horses Is Tame
Horses, the indie game that is too scandalous for either Valve or Epic, is only beyond the pale if you're not familiar with any other art form.

Same for the academia
If we can only have art from people who "aren't in it for the money" that means we can only have art from privileged middle-class dilettantes. Making art being a viable career is responsible for nearly all worthwhile art, and if it's not a viable career any more we will get drastically less of it.

Spent the last month mapping the blogosphere by its links. The graph is finally ready

Communities clump into a big hex and the whole thing looks like a star map

What are blogs anyway but stars in the sky?

as a software developer i'm watching LLMs stripmine the field that I love. I'm watching all my coworkers trade creative connection with their peers for the instant responses of a chatbot, and the clarity and purpose of documentation and design for (temporary! destructive!) speed.
I think that may be the core division here: if you are an author or an artist the cons of generative AI very likely outweigh the pros for you

If you are a software developer the opposite is true

Why i cut money and economics out
When you're writing a tabletop roleplaying game, the mechanics should evoke the atmosphere you want in your story.

A simple example: we're writing a cozy woodland mystery game. What are the combat mechanics like? Well, clearly there aren't any. Combat isn't part of our cozy woodland story.

But...
