Nyoink!
Assemble, lads and ladies, and any Heir which might be in the audience, and gaze upon mine newest creation: Masks of the Leviathan, a game of playacting in many a mood.

Alright, you might have seen the playtest version, but this is the real deal!

I'll be frank: Zak S used manufactured OSR vs SG hostility as cover and leverage. I think it'll be a while before his influence finally fades out, but maybe it's better every year.

Animosity mostly developed later, and got written in retroactively.

The idea that OSR games and story games are creatively incompatible was founded on some stunningly bad-faith readings by some of the worst people in the OSR.

For the Forge hardcore, both those of us who were interested in playing & discussing OSR games and those of us who weren't, nevertheless the indie OSR were our absolute colleagues and comrades. The Forge provided early material publishing support for at least a couple of OSR creators.

For sure. I wouldn't say ALL your first gen PbtA designers, but some of us for certain. No doubt about it.

The first game of 2026 was
"What Dust Remains" by @momatoes.com - a powerful and profound
gmless story game where all players contribute to creating the life of a Pioneer with a mix of card drafting, prompts, and dice rolls.

We were all in tears at the end.
I cannot recommend this enough.

Sure.

I haven't read or played Chainmail, so not a firsthand hack, but a hack of a hack, sure.

In light of yesterday's stirring performance by Lucy Dacus in NYC, here's an article by my colleague Robert Forrant on the 1912 "Bread and Roses" Strike in Lawrence, Mass. #SolidarityForever

"apocalypse world discourages prep"

😂🤮
December 30, 2025 at 11:57 PM
Yes!

Apocalypse World doesn't have, like, mechanical guardrails, but when you have to improvise, it always prefers you to extrapolate realistically from your prep and other established truth, not throw capricious curves.

Oh! Did you see this? It's on topic I think...

Wildly bad faith, yes!

Keeler's in over her head. In that example I'm telling her the truth and I'm telling her what my prep demands — Tum Tum's bodyguards are closing in on her because they are, not because she rolled and asked. If she hadn't asked, I'd've surprised her with them a minute later.

My End of Year video is on the "Golden Age of Indie RPGs," from roughly 2010 to 2025. I start with Apocalypse World's release, work through the Google+ Era, and follow design lineages and historical events that have impacted the hobby up through 2025.

Not quite, that I know of, but...

Apocalypse World's moves are a development of an earlier dice system called Otherkind Dice, as seen in Psi*Run and other games, and there IS a straight-up tabletop minis war game that uses Otherkind Dice:
