On Thursday the 2024 issue of @theneweuropean.bsky.social comes out and they have given me the platform to explain why Gisèle Pelicot is my hero and how she radically changed the conversation about shame and sexual assault
It is my proudest writing.

Sometimes you just have to take a chip clip from a low priority bag and put it on a high priority bag, it’s not personal or anything

We need to get better at connecting our health policy to transportation policy.

“Every $1,300 New York invested in building bike-lanes in 2015 provided benefits equivalent to 1 additional year of life at full health over the lifetime of all city residents, according to a new economic assessment.”

Bike-lanes are a sound public health investment.

Welcome to circular design, not hiding how things are made and maintained, with drywall that is maybe waste from coal fired power plants.

What if this kind of place-by-place change was business-as-usual for cities? Just happening constantly. It would save lives & reduce crashes for everyone, improve public health & livability, decrease pollution & climate emissions through increased walkability & much more. HT @pinoyurbanist for image

One thing I liked about Delhi’s many concrete viaducts is that they’re all colorfully painted. Who could argue this isn’t an improvement on bald concrete? London could be much improved if we also painted murals on our brutal concrete infrastructure. These aren’t the best photos but you get the idea

People are often surprised when I tell them this: both Twitter and Facebook/insta/threads are now specifically engineered to downgrade, hide, suppress real journalism. If this platform is different, that's a huge change

Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. For sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them.
