3. Leadership is about doing what is necessary, not just what is popular. Read literally anything our founders wrote about virtue, and the inherent risks to a society based on democratic processes to sustain the rule of law to the extent that unvirtuous people gain power.

THREAD: Judge Ellis is the first federal judge to review extensive body cam video of DHS's actions in Chicago. She finds that DHS *repeatedly* misled the public and made claims that were disproven by agents' own videos.

I'll go through some of the most egregious ones here.

This headline is journalistic malpractice. This isn't Epstein "alleging" that Trump knew. This is Epstein and Maxwell discussing - in 2011, long before Trump had political salience - how the FACT that Trump knew might play out

Both of them took as a given that this was a fact in a private email

Also it’s bizarre to report this as “Epstein alleging Trump knew of his conduct.” Seems like the more notable thing is that Trump was engaging in that conduct.
Why did [VICTIM] spend hours at Epstein’s house with Trump? Was he giving her a piano lesson?

They went into this terrorized community to incite people. And pepper sprayed an infant. There is no level of depravity these people won’t sink to.

There’s also an added implication that if the economy was humming along Trump should be supported but there are about 50,000 other reasons to oppose him and it’s actually good to not think of them as distractions
When you say something is a distraction, you are not-very-implicitly scolding anyone who makes a big deal out of it: You’re a sucker! You fell for the trick!

When the putative distraction is some egregious breach of political norms or actual laws, you are helping normalize and minimize the breach.
I find this distraction discourse unhelpful. Trump's video was appalling and significant and should be analyzed and denounced, and part of the work of politics is to turn it into a major controversy in its own right, as a symbol of Trump's autocratic disdain for the people.

Fed agents sent TWO ppl to the hospital, one woman for a gunshot wound, one man for head trauma, during this incident

Smashed vehicles, casings/ballistics, surveillance video, witnesses...none independently investigated by CPD, per spox, even after fed agents unleashed tear gas on ~20 CPD officers
So this video and the one of the ICE goon bodyslamming the guy that circulated yesterday are in the same location. At the end of this video you see a unique-looking building on the left. The bodyslamming happens right in front of it. These two videos are essentially one near-continuous scene.

Again, Dems could make this their shutdown demand: that government funding be accompanied by laws constraining ICE and requiring it not use Latino ethnicity as a criterion for detention. "You can't jail someone for being Latino."

But instead, they're vaguely fighting for "healthcare subsidies."
WOW. The lead plaintiff is a Latino man who's been here legally for 24 years. He was grabbed off the street by plainclothes federal agents who didn't even ASK about his status.

He was detained overnight and only released once a supervisor realized he had been illegally arrested.

Indeed. Earlier this summer, the White House did this to me, as a scientific expert source in media, and issued a formal statement regarding my personal campaign contribution history in an attempt to discredit my commentary on wildfire, climate, and federal policy. Yet more alarm bells ringing...
I had this exact same experience this morning. Same reporter as Heidi.

This is *not* normal.

I have spoken to the press on these issues for two decades. No government official has ever demanded to know my identity in order to give a comment on a story.
