Hi everyone,

As part of my dissertation, I am researching audiobook narration.

If you have listened to an audiobook within the last two years, or have previously been a frequent audiobook user, I would really appreciate your thoughts!

You can find the survey here:

Fiiiine, apparently half my readers enjoy an info dump, so here we go!

Grasslands Sequester Carbon Too or “Why trees are not the be-all and end-all.”

Ahem. *takes a sip of water*
I THINK they’re mad because of the hardscaping? Not entirely sure.

(One guy tried to claim it didn’t store CO2. Do you want a lecture on prairie carbon sequestration? Because this is how you get a lecture on prairie carbon sequestration.)

Okay right I am in a cafe feeding both of us so let’s talk about this. It’s one of those things where it almost seems reasonable, at first: why *shouldn’t* breastfeeding be discreet? Let’s unpack that because it’s not actually reasonable.
I am going to wake up and drink my coffee and run my errands and then I am going to give you all a talk about this specific strain of misogyny because wow it is pervasive

Because of [waves hands at the state of the world] there's been a bit of discussion about how difficult it is to sink oil tankers.

As this account firmly approves of the empirical method, ie the boffin lingo for fucking around and finding out, let's look at an example.

Meet Torrey Canyon.

Discworld QOTD, from Snuff

“Cheery was aware that Commander Vimes didn't like the phrase 'The innocent have nothing to fear', believing the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty but in the longer term even more from those who say things like 'The innocent have nothing to fear'.”
Discworld QOTD, from I Shall Wear Midnight

“Oh, I feel very angry a lot of the time," said Tiffany, "but I just put it away somewhere until I can do something useful with it.”
Discworld QOTD, from Lords and Ladies

“I had to learn. All my life. The hard way. And the hard way’s pretty hard, but not so hard as the easy way.”

Today is National Biscuit Day, and it’s about time that I populated this account with biscuit (cookie) sets from the past few years. Here are some of my favourites. 🧵

First up, a set inspired by the delicious designs of William Morris and John Henry Dearle.

To mark the 1st day of my 4th year without Alice I have an announcement:
I’ve joined up with a determined group of women working to change the narrative around trans people. Women standing in solidarity with our trans siblings.

Our first step is to ask cis women to read and sign our open letter ⬇️
Not in our name: Women in support of the trans+ community
Can you spare a minute to help this campaign?

the bit about Africans being active in the slave trade is telling. it’s something that is only relevant if you think the point of discussing slavery is to disburse racial blame rather than understanding history.
amazingly fucked up that the NYT is uncritically publishing the claim, “Race has some biological reality.”

that is, definitionally, racism. textbook.

I can't even.

How about removing the cap not because of how it plays politically but because it will bring tens of thousands of children out of poverty?

Fucking hell. Winning power should be about helping people not running scared of losing power.

The ultimate irony of halving net immigration numbers:

You can do it without reducing small boats crossings at all!!

This is Nigel Farage’s immigration doom-loop & Starmer is up to his neck in the death trap like the Tories before him 🤦‍♀️

I’d love some good recommendations added to this thread — also please bear in mind that what we take for granted of controls might not be easy to grasp for these nice folks, so I’d especially love to see games recommended that have good tutorials or easy controls
I am a senior and have never played the video games. I must say your enthusiasm has peaked an interest. May I ask please, are there any games that would be good for dementia patients?Maybe something soothing with a sense of accomplishment and humor for my husband? Or something we could do together?

When I realised that I wasn't able to be in public spaces with unfamiliar men because I would have panic attacks and dissociative episodes, I got therapy and being able to tolerate this was one of the specific goals we worked on.
"Is it reasonable that the presence of the gay person will cause alarm or distress..."

"Is it reasonable that the presence of the Black person will cause alarm or distress..."

"Is it reasonable that the presence of the disabled person will cause alarm or distress..."
Sorry trans people, but it's fine to exclude you from services because you are too gross and disgusting to be allowed in public spaces.

Guidelines were described as: “fuelling a culture of hostility and suspicion towards abortion and pregnancy loss”. We can see where this is leading…
"Police have been issued guidance on how to search women’s homes for abortion drugs and check their phones for menstrual cycle tracking apps after unexpected pregnancy loss"

"...police could bypass legal requirements for a court order to obtain medical records..."

A core feature of the Trump regime is its embrace of "authoritarian democracy", as a battering ram with which to demolish any obstacle to its power.

The very notion of "authoritarian democracy" can sound contradictory.

But it's an old & dangerous idea, that needs to be better understood. [THREAD]
Stephen Miller on the court order to release Tufts student Rümeysa Öztürk: "There's a judicial coup in this country....This judicial coup by a handful of Marxist judges...can only be understood as an attack on democracy."
