Check out my article today in Inside Higher Ed about how I've had some success innovating in the classroom using virtual reality to teach about the September 11th terrorist attacks

Teaching Sept. 11 Using Virtual Reality (opinion)
Seeking a way to convey the import of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to students too young to remember them, Adam M. McMahon writes that he turned to virtual reality.

Just now: The plaintiffs who were arguing that Utah GOP's congressional map is illegal won in court.

The judge orders one of the two maps submitted by the plaintiffs ('map 1') be used.

The ruling, if it stands, guarantees that Democrats will pick up a congressional seat in Utah next year.

As someone who spent ten years in grad school (and did defend + graduate) I’m always so weirded out by people who think being smart about one thing makes them smart about everything when what being highly educated did to me was saddle me with the crushing certainty that I’m not smart about anything
the pandemic really fucked him up. he had no expertise in public health, but felt like being a quant guy should make him an expert by default, and people not agreeing with him on that point just sent him into a bizarre radicalizing ego spiral.

been doing some light reading about the aftermath of the korean dictatorship and I think it's really important that we repeat this to ourselves, to our friends, to our neighbors, to our politicians
Nuremburg trials is the moderate position
He said that the agents would throw food at them to eat. The agents threatened to withhold food for a week and to beat him up if he didn't sign deportation papers. He said he saw others refuse and get beaten/receive no food. He signed because he was afraid.

I’m here in Germany & feel very distant from American politics, but it is all so absolutely insane and I’m beyond fed up. I don’t want Trump or MAGA fascists or cowardly Dems and I’m tired of fighting with other Americans about politics. We NEED a parliamentary system so we can build coalitions!

Psst Republicans control all of the branches of government
No party that ever started a shutdown won it. It's a little shocking how many people genuinely believed Dems could win policy concessions.

Democrats caved because their phones were likely ringing off the hooks from people without paychecks, food assistance, the ability to travel safely, etc.
MSNBC reported Schumer's office felt that the longer that shutdown went on, the more likely it was that people would start to blame the Dems.

My kingdom for Democrats that don't govern out of fear. I've said it before and I'll say it again: The American people are far braver than their reps.

“We are at a moment right now where people are asking themselves why can’t the Democratic Party defend this assault on democracy . . . and I would submit to you that if you can’t draw the line at genocide, you probably can’t draw the line at democracy.”

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.

Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.
so currently defectors are:

Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)

And the lesson for the future is to commit your crimes in DC, a federal enclave, so the president can pardon co-conspirators!

How about we shut down the government for this very popular and specific goal and then, hear me out, we hold out for like a month and a half and then, ok this part is important, after a watershed election where we ran the table, ONLY THEN, fold and don't get the one thing we said we wanted.

They caved in March so they could get a better deal now. They’re caving now so they can get a better deal in some indeterminate future. The better deal is always just beyond their reach, but continuing to cave will get them there. And if you don’t agree with that, you don’t understand Politics,

Trump’s pardon attorney Ed Martin claims Trump is pardoning his Georgia co-defendants and other “alternate electors.”

Note: Trump’s Georgia co-defendants are charged under state law. The president can’t pardon people for state crimes.

Today is my birthday, but here in Berlin it is the anniversary of Kristallnacht. As we were leaving brunch some residents were polishing a small plaque in front of their building that commemorated what happened. Being here is reminding me that antisemitism is still pervasive, evil & must be defeated

GOP SEN. JOHN KENNEDY: It may be 2026 when we'll come out of the shutdown.

REPORTERS: 😳

KENNEDY: I'm not kidding, you guys. I mean, you see what I see. Okay? This shutdown is going to last a long time. What's going to get us out of it?

First day in Berlin has been awesome. Went to a restaurant and only spoke in German & the nice man running the falafel place was very patient with me. I bought apples at a street market & the clerk (who did not speak English) asked where I was from and wanted to talk about Zohran. <3 <3 <3
