MSNBC reported Schumer's office felt that the longer that shutdown went on, the more likely it was that people would start to blame the Dems.

My kingdom for Democrats that don't govern out of fear. I've said it before and I'll say it again: The American people are far braver than their reps.

Patty Murray should've been Leader. Infuriating but also predictable to see Schumer just play along with this level of spinelessness.

Regular reminder that Axios stories saying Dems are about to cave are likely sourced from GOP staffers trying to make it happen.
Doesn't mean it definitely won't happen. But it's like those NYT stories that Harvard is considering caving (they haven't). The anonymous source was trying to manifest it.

This is going to get spun as a "thermostatic shift" chart, but it should be properly interpreted as a "information environment is broken" chart.

In 2024, voters didn't know what Trump would do, and so they shifted towards him based on vibes. Now they are finding out, and they hate it.
Nearly every county in Virginia has shifted blue in a massive statement against Donald Trump.

This has been such a rough election cycle. Kudos to all the Dem campaign staff that are in the game, haven't left the game, and pieced everything together to keep your crashing spaceships moving til the finish line. I'm grateful for your sacrifice, even if the Party as a whole never truly will be.

There are a bunch of careerists who have a lot of power, who have no problem milking the donation environment to line their own pockets. They care far more about getting paid and making connections that'll get them their next job than they do about winning the election, saving their constituents.
"Campaigns that should be building movements are instead building donor databases. Political energy that could mobilize communities gets redirected into optimizing email subject lines and testing which desperate plea extracts the most dollars from exhausted supporters."

We need cheap rent so idiosyncratic weirdos can make a living pursuing their passions.
Call it Anti-Industrial Policy: we need is a suite of policies to nudge Americans to own and operate more little public-facing businesses. Speciality shops. Six-seater bars. Esoteric services. Restaurants serving two or three dishes. It would lower overall productivity and increase quality of life.

In my NORC 2024 panel, respondents who didn't match to the voter file were *18.5 percentage points* more pro-Trump than the sample overall.

My guess: Trump voters were less willing to give the information needed to match to voter records.

lot of this comes down to how utterly dysfunctional Congress is as a whole
Aside from how Obama is remembered, it's striking that Obamacare is basically the last serious presidential legislative agenda that wasn't just trying to contort an annual budget bill to fit in everything you can crowbar into it.
There probably is a lesson in the fact that Obama shepherded the most left-wing piece of federal legislation since the Great Society, over opposition in and outside his own party, and is chiefly remembered by the left now as a do-nothing moderate.

Still my favorite explanation of the difference between INT and WIS: int is knowing that Frankenstein is the name of the doctor.

Wis is knowing that Frankenstein was, in fact, the monster

Dems mostly hate this DNC paying influencers strategy, but Reps don’t even mind their media being on Russia payroll. Why? Different consumer demand from Dem vs GOP bases. Plus more division among Dem consumers: some want “Dems too far left,” others want “Dems too centrist,” others “Dems so uncool”

BREAKING: Social Security Administration chief data officer and whistle-blower Charles Borges has resigned after bombshell report that SSA put highly-sensitive data at risk. He sent out an email to colleagues moments ago.
