More context for the Flann O'Brien quote from The Third Policeman (1967) that I've been using as a metaphor for how we can perceive the heinous attacks on trans rights, and how cis folks and others might not understand how not only will their rights also be violated, *it's already happening*

Hey!! Here's my new piece for The New Republic!!

It's about how Meta is cramming generative video slop (the most energy-intensive of the gen systems) into its massive global advertising engine: a recipe for an order magnitude worsening of its already-huge harms 😱

Scheduling mifepristone largely invalidates the point of the schedule.

Ostensibly, the schedule is meant to monitor drugs *which have the ability to form physical dependence*.

This step makes the schedule a list of drugs that lawmakers dislike for feelings reasons.

another example of how the Salvation Army is a shitty organization. remember.
Also reminder that the Salvation Army uses your donations to bring ICE pizza:

Good morning.

If you live in Alberta, you should know that today your government will invoke the notwithstanding clause to wage war against transgender Albertans.

Not because transgender persons are harmful, but because the UCP is distracting you from their mountain of failures.

I attended a talk by a scientist at a Chinese University and realized that all the background climate data that she used came from the US (CO₂ Keeling Curve, global temperature time series, etc.). Although China funds a lot of research, the destruction of US science will affect science globally.

Grant was president during the centennial, Coolidge during the sesquicentennial, and Ford during the bicentennial.

It probably says more about the general mediocrity of the presidency than anything else, but all of them were fairly unpopular and/or scandal ridden at the time, so it's a pattern.
Trump is gonna be President during America’s 250th anniversary celebration. Which is, frankly, fitting.

This is a phenomenon that has long fascinated me. For a significant portion of the American population, BEING racist is a much more acceptable position than being CALLED racist.
It’s funny that even now, with everything we know, there’s still a retreat towards treating racism as somehow uniquely unbelievable.

Donald’s sudden change of heart regarding the Epstein files means one of three things.

1) He has been assured it will stall in the Senate.

2) If not, he will veto and hope it’s not overridden.

3) Or, perhaps most likely, his Justice Department has already destroyed the most damning evidence.
