also these mallards. Does anyone know what's up with the cream mallard (?)? I'm not sure if he's hybridized with the domestic geese, if he's just uniquely colored, albino, or another bird entirely 🪶

I visited my bird spot this morning in the snow and I spotted hooded mergansers in the river, finally!!!!

First bird of the year is my neighbor's rooster Paul, followed closely by several blue jays. I'm getting loud and colorful vibes for 2026.

Stories like this make me feel hopeful. Resilience in the face of adversity. When USAID was shut down programs like this malaria program in cameroon faced collapse. They found a way to continue doing the work and saving the lives of children affected by malaria.

Almost 80% of the land needed for #GreatNicobar project is forest land. While government estimates that almost a million trees will be cut, a rainforest ecologist estimates the number could be as high as 10 million. scroll.in/article/1075...

On the Great Nicobar island, why the future is fearful
The government has ambitious plans to build a shipping hub on the island. But are its native tribal communities on board? I travelled to the island to find out.

I don't feel like I've aged *all that much* in the last 10 years, but I had to take new pictures to renew my passport and it turns out being 28 is a lot younger than being almost 38.

I *was* a little tempted to shovel the neighbor's sidewalk while I shoveling my parents' sidewalk, since they hadn't gotten around to it yet and it made me a little grumpy.
The most New England thing I’ve learned about living in New England is that snow storms are actually the Protestant God’s way of giving one an opportunity to compete with the neighbors in rising early to plow the street in front of their houses as well as one’s own.

They held the funeral for an Ivorian friend's mother-in-law last week. She led the women's society for several villages, so the masques came out and danced for her funeral. She was always extremely kind and welcoming when I was in the villages, and it's very cool to see her honored like this.
