on the one hand, this sounds like it won't raise enough money for them to fund meaningful tax relief for the people struggling the most with the cost of living, but on the other it will be ruthlessly attacked and exploited by their political opponents

Overall Shift: The National/ACT/NZ First bloc saw a decrease in support from 52.8% in the 2023 election to 46.5% in August 2025, while the Labour/Greens/Māori Party bloc increased from 41.6% to 50%. Gender and Age Differences: Women: The Labour/Greens/Māori Party bloc shows significantly higher support among women, especially those aged 18-49 (76.5%). Men: The National/ACT/NZ First bloc maintains stronger support among men, particularly those aged 50+ (66.5%). Party-Specific Trends: Labour and Greens gained support, especially among younger women, while National and ACT saw declines, though ACT's support among men aged 18-49 increased. “Support for Labour increased 3% points to 34% – the highest level of support for the party since August 2022 – when former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern still led the party.
