Nice roundup of comments on the tariff/manufacturing fiasco that is the Trump administration.

Nice to be in the company of @mtkonczal.bsky.social and @pkrugman.bsky.social in this piece.

'An Abject Failure': Economists Trash Trump's Disastrous Job Creation Record in Year-End Reviews | Common Dreams
President Donald Trump's promise of booming manufacturing jobs through high tariffs has failed, as economists reveal a decline in key sectors.

I think this is a very thoughtful assessment.

I have written ~1,000 published columns, but am not a journalist. Public opinion researcher is not the same thing as journalism.
If refusing to comment is enough to kill a story, then the government now has veto power over journalism.
That’s what CBS normalized last night — and it should scare everyone.

CBS Pulled a “60 Minutes” Story Because the White House Refused to Comment — That’s a Veto on Journalism
Pulling a finished investigation because the administration refused to comment isn’t journalism. It’s submission.

Wait, are you suggesting Naomi Wolf doesn’t take time to carfully scrutinize her examples?

Great chart from @ernietedeschi.bsky.social on the hellsite: goods generating all of the "excess" inflation while services converge to zero:
Zohran: "I mean, think about when you fly.  We have made it such a difficult experience to go through TSA that there's now a financial incentive to sign up for a separate program that can move you through it quicker. We have monetized the dysfunction."

If you're unfamiliar with the writing of @profhicks.bsky.social , this one skewers current GOP economic strategies in IN, which actually have largely been GOP national strategy since Reagan. Why do we reject Marx, yet some still blindly embrace Laffer?

1. A blockade is an act of war

2. The idea that Venezuela has stolen land from the United States is so laughably stupid on its face that even some of his base is like 🤨

3. It’s always about oil.

I know this graphic doesn't contain the robust casual evidence that say, RFK, jr's HHS demands, but it is almost like something tangible happened last April that has sent the US economy into a moribund state.

I wonder what it could've possibly been?

Today has me thinking of these words: “The soldier’s heart, the soldier’s spirit, the soldier’s soul, are everything.”

This should be the biggest story in the country right now. The sitting US President was extorting state lawmakers from his own party by threatening to withhold public money if they didn’t gerrymander for him.

I don’t know how else to say it…

Bad day to be an Indianan, great day to be a Hoosier.

Bet that came in “handy”

BTW these data alone ought to cause American Compass to close and Oren Cass to join Alina Baba's law firm.

Looks like the GOP's effort to create a multi-ethnic working class has run into a few minefields . . . which they laid themselves.

Also looks like a 4 year degree continues to provide good insulation against economic shocks.
