Very happy to see this out in CPS! We study class identities and their social and political relevance over several decades in Britain, Denmark, Norway, and the US. A small thread:

journals.sagepub.com/eprint/SIRW4...

🤷‍♀️ More work is needed, though, to determine which factors and dynamics have triggered this activation of the rural-urban identities in US politics.

🤔 Because the change was abrupt, it’s hard to explain with slow economic or demographic trends. Instead, our findings point out that the current rural-urban divide in US politics results from an activation of place around 2016.

📊 We also use panel data to provide further individual-level evidence of realignment based on positions on the rural-urban divide. We find that especially in 2016, previous Democratic in rural areas switched to the Republican party while urban Republicans switched to support the Democratic Party.
📈 Our key finding: the rural–urban divide didn’t grow gradually. It *jumped* in 2016. Support for Republicans became much more strongly associated with living in rural areas in 2016—and this pattern then remained stable in 2020.

🔎 We study the rural–urban divide in US politics—with a focus on when it emerged. Using longitudinal @electionstudies.bsky.social, CES and GSS data, we examine how the association between place of living and voting has developed over time in US presidential elections.

🎁 Just got pre-Christmas academic gift from @electoralstudies.bsky.social. In our research note, Chloé de Grauwe and I document income-based differences in #economic voting. In a nutshell: the rich punish governments (somewhat) more for perceived economic downturns.

In his dissertation, Nadjim studies (1) what Canadians’ views are on issues and policies affecting Black Canadians and (2) what influences voting behaviour of Black Canadians.

The dissertation uses of a wealth of novel data and makes a *huge* contribution to the literature!
