Hi friendos, due to a series of really shitty things happening, Mr Zuya and I have lost all of our financial stability. Mr Zuya's been trying to get a new job since October of 2024 and was terminated from his existing job back in May.

We could really use some help ko-fi.com/zuyadragon

You know, the fair use and AI debate would probably look different if the AI companies hadn't opened with "Hey, authors, we've invented a thing that's going to turn you into buggy whip manufacturers, we're going to get rich doing it, you need new careers, no, we won't pay you, you're worthless."

I'm going to put aside the weird feeling of seeing a saint born after I was, but since we know the guy was big on halo 2 there are now people who in 2004-2005 got fragged by a saint on xbox live
Pope Leo XIV canonized Carlo Acutis, a 15-year-old who died in 2006, as the Catholic Church’s first millennial saint on Sunday.

Update: we just received a statement from Macmillan/Tor taking full responsibility for failing to register copyright, promising to make us whole and pay us any settlement money we lost out on due to that error, and promising to find & correct the lapses that caused this.

Every pub should do this.
this part right here is gonna create massive resentment in the industry. the copyright registration system and the fact that you apparently have to pay a bonus fee for protection from big companies pirating your work (and that tons of publishers never paid the bonus fee...)
Instead of working to include as many writers as possible in the settlement, the plaintiffs instead agreed on arbitrary and minimal definitions of which books would be included. It’s almost like they wanted a quick win – any win – even if they screwed over most authors. 4/

there is a point at which your mind breaks when forced to consider something that is both the horrifying collapse of your country but also somehow in the dumbest way that is imaginable.
I know none of this is funny and I’m not sure what wall I’ve hit where I’m resorting to jokes, but I swear “Chipocolypse Now” sounds like something chips ahoy or the Keebler elves gave us in the 80s

still a lot of question of what authors will actually get, but I never actually expected it to be real money and if somehow it does turn out to be real(ish) money?

publishers, we are gonna be so fucking mad at anyone who fucked us over.

If your bot cannot look at a conversation about a noose and recognize it as a conversation about suicide, or if your bot can’t “analyze” that exchange and identify its own dangerous encouragement to self-harm, it’s not as “smart” as my goddamn rice cooker, which knows when the rice is cooked.

Everyone can contribute something to the fight, but because certain actions tend to get all the coverage, it can be easy to feel shut out. So here's a thread of ways to help that do NOT include:
Going anywhere
Calling anyone
Writing anything
If you want to help, we want your help. Let's go....

When I read the celebrity diagnosis stories it always just reminds me that the barriers to diagnosis are REAL and not limited to the financial cost. These are folks who have the best support money can buy and they didn't get a diagnosis until their 40s-50s.
Every now and again I read about some celebrity excitedly sharing their autism or ADHD diagnosis and each time I wonder if they have engaged with the neurodivergent community and understand that for many people, the stigma around neurodivergence is such that they cannot make such a diagnosis public?

This is a thing that happened when we tried to ship an international order from Ohio to the UK this past Friday

I’m curious if any of my other writer/publisher friends in the US have encountered a similar issue with international orders sent through the post office

Shipping books internationally in the US: a Cautionary Tale

This past Friday, my wife went down to our local post office (NE #Ohio) to ship a couple of our book orders

(I write lots of books, mainly on paranormal topics like ghosts)

One was headed to the UK

No, but it's EXACTLY what happens when a narcissist has ANY type of power over you.
Parent?
Boss?
HOA President?
Holder of the fishing licenses?
If that narcissist makes any error, & your presence REMINDS them of that error, they will expend any amount of energy to make you a nonperson.

I assure you that I don't need to be cautioned that LLMs are not sentient. That said, LLMs have the "bear-proof garbage can" quandary, which is that the apparent intelligence of the best LLMs significantly overlaps the actual intelligence of the most willfully stupid humans.
LLMs, the technology underpinning the current AI hype wave, don't do what they're usually presented as doing. They have no innate understanding, they do not think or reason, and they have no way of knowing if a response they provide is truthful or harmful.

oh for fucks sake youtube
YouTube is secretly using AI to edit people's videos

• Skin is being smoothed or sharpened

• Features like ears are being altered

• YouTube confirmed there's an 'experiment' on Shorts to 'unblur' and 'improve' clarity

• There's currently no way to opt out

No one sees, "They're arming soldiers in DC," as the 4-alarm-fire it actually is.

Everyone is desensitized to guns, & thinks, "Obviously, soldiers are used to carrying them."

Remember the Ft. Hood shooter?
He was able to kill so many people because soldiers don't carry guns on MILITARY BASES.
