Part of my childhood was spent exploring the abandoned gardens of Danesfield house and I loved it, still do.

I never knew about the Hill Fort and I'd always assumed the area had been wooded for millenia; y'know, like all of those Beech trees were 'natural'
Here's the other half of the pair, from a 'best guess' on the arrangement at Danesfield (1900s hotel & landscape gardens put paid to a lot of it; RAF use in the WWII period affected other aspects)
But some of the earthworks are still in good nick.

We made assumptions about contemporaneous use...

Every day is a school day on Bsky

Great stuff
This is Angel Falls in Venezuela, with its 807-metre sheer plunge - the tallest waterfall on our planet.

Except - it isn't. There's one that's bigger. MUCH bigger. And when I learned about it this week, my mind was fully blown.

OK. Buckle up! (Especially if you don't have a head for heights.)

I'm old enough to remember when flocks of Starlings gathering in the trees was normal. Now I rarely see more than one or two together
Not sure what was happening last night, thousands of birds gathered in the trees having a party at the airport.

My wife said she’s seen the same earlier in the evening near home

The defense team presses Lairmore on whether the sandwich really 'exploded.' They return to the photo of the sandwich and wrapper on the ground.

"That sandwich hasn't exploded at all, has it?" defense asks.

"It looks like a little bit is coming out towards the bottom," Lairmore replies.

Seasons Greetings 🧟
When in the woods, best beware of dead man's fingers lurking there.
Reaching up above the ground, a creepy fungi to be found.

Happy Halloween everyone.

On the Isle of Wight each sailing club has slightly different racing boats that have been designed to suit their environment. The Bembridge Redwings really stand out with their tall red sails with the curved top and curvaceous hull.

World record breaking hurricane, and not in a good way

Say a prayer for Jamaica
Hurricane Melissa is a record breaker.

210kt gust recorded above the surface setting a new world record, previous was 209kts by Typhoon Megi (2010)

The eye is now down to -5.21 making it the driest eye in Atlantic basin history, the world record is -5.00.

What a beast.

'Watch and Learn' Adventures on the High Seas

Do any any of these ships looks where they're going?
These things here are emergency wreck buoys, and if you're thinking the colour scheme looks somewhat like a circus big top, just wait until you hear about the clown show that inspired their introduction.

Are you a fan of Starlings?
They don't get the amount of love they deserve, in my opinion! 😍🐦😊

Vertical rows are the agrivoltaic winner!

“The vertical panels produce slightly less electricity—but with higher value, as generation peaks coincide with morning and late afternoon demand…The crops don't seem to mind the presence of solar panels and they like the wind protection they provide.”
Double harvest: Vertical solar panels and crops thrive side by side
Imagine a field where solar panels and crops coexist—with no trade-off. It sounds like science fiction, but that's precisely what researchers from Aarhus University have now documented in a full-scale...

Island of Sardinia
Thousands of dead fish strewn across the waters of Cagliari harbour, this morning, killed by toxic run-off from the city’s streets and drains after last night’s deluge.

Is that St George on a teeny, tiny little horse, or is he standing in front of it? Hard to see but it's traditional for him to be mounted so I'm going to add him to the collection.

Swannington, Norfolk, St Margaret.
By far the most important object in the church is a Norman pillar piscina carved with St George and the Dragon. It was hidden in the rood loft staircase and only discovered when that was unblocked a hundred years ago.

I never knew about this until now.
Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.
