i still have the letter of commendation given to me by my county’s medical director for volunteering to transport the first confirmed COVID patient in my state to a specialty facility. less than a month later we went from PAPR suits to reusing N95s for months and wearing trash bags as gowns.
i keep thinking about how much time i spent training on how to properly wear a PAPR device and then when a pandemic hit wore one once and then never again. i literally haven’t seen a PAPR unit since 2020. it’s like they disappeared.

ICE isn’t just brutal. It’s also big business. From 2008 to 2021 ICE spent *$1.2 billion* on geolocation tracking, $561M on data analysis, $252M on government databases, and $97M on data brokers. Most of that went to companies who will lobby for this system to stay in place.

I think there's an unwillingness in the pro-science movement to acknowledge that a significant percentage of maha moms are driven by a desire to abuse, control and even dispose of people they find inconvenient and resent being expected to take care of: children, the elderly, and disabled people.
the thing about maha is that it's an inherently unstable coalition. you can't have a coalition of chronically ill people who are more or less seeking knowledge and people who are primarily driven by violent prejudice against us. the former group is confused but mostly not self hating.

We used to make fun of people for pretending to be experts after reading one well-written article about a topic. Now I long to return to that arcadian idyll, that golden age of people actually reading one article before pretending to be an expert.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham supports a legislative push to ban 287(g) agreements, which entail local officials sending inmates at local jails into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, a spokesperson told Source New Mexico on Thursday.

if we defeat ICE/DHS and succeed at making deportations extremely rare over the next few years, we will save tens of millions of lives over the next several decades of climate crisis.

“your body is naturally strong enough to avoid infections and chronic illness as long as you avoid covid“ is a perfect mirror of anti vax rhetoric, which it also feeds into

Begging people to please stop posting @halfwaypost.bsky.social's fake stories. It's not even satire. They're not satirizing anything; they're just writing fan fiction.

If you look in the replies to any of their posts, it's like 95% people who think it's real. They should stop it.

I called my senators and told them it doesn’t make sense to have demands to follow already existing law and that everyone knows they aren’t actually doing anything unless they try to claw back dhs funding
Dems coalescing around 5 restrictions on ICE, I'm told:

DHS required to cooperate with state probes (big)
CBP stays at border
warrants for arrests
IDs, bodycams
ICE out of churches, schools

"That package unites a lot of Dems," Sen Chris Murphy tells me on the pod:

As Trump scrambles to contain the damage from the latest ICE horrors, Senator Chris Murphy offers a sharp indictment of Trump-ICE lawlessness—and explains how Dems can meet the urgency of the moment.

As a VA nurse, Alex Pretti was a member of AFGE. This union also reps Border Patrol, and may have repped Pretti's killer. I talked to VA workers who are furious and want Border Patrol out of AFGE. "For a union member to kill another is a fundamental betrayal of what a union is supposed to be.”
Alex Pretti’s Killer May Be Part of His Union
Border Patrol agents belong to the same federal workers union as VA nurses, a situation some of Pretti’s colleagues are determined to change.

This is what surveillance can look and feel like.

I’m no artist 😂. But lately I’ve been so overcome by this ball of surveillance encapsulating me in my bed island. Endless questionnaires to prove I’m still disabled, and to what degree. Every system clawing away to wring me dry of my humanity.

As someone with 25-year NIH funded lab, I endorse. Linking NIH and DHS/ICE funding in the same bill is blood money
As a someone with a 33 year NIH-funded lab whose grant is supposed to be reviewed this week, shut NIH down if that is what's needed to end ICE terrorism. Innocent lives are more important 🧪
The Senate may choose to vote together on the DHS and LHHS bills. Thus, a filibuster on DHS may mean no funding for NIH. What my colleagues are saying:

“Shut it down, public health will understand. I’ll work without pay again.”
