1/ In late October, Middlebury College announced that Lia Smith, a 21-year-old student and diver, had taken her own life. She was also a trans athlete in a country that often treats transgender participation in sports as a political controversy. 🧵

This article quotes the university president saying Lia was on the women's swimming and diving team, but she's not on this year's roster on their athletic department website. The NCAA banned her from being on the team when Trump first took office.
Lía Smith, a missing trans student in Vermont has been found dead.

"Vermont State Police touted the national 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline for those in distress or their loved ones." This is the same lifeline the Trump admin cut for LGBTQ people in crisis.

Been trying to stay away from the “oo what are you afraid of, FARMERS MARKETS” line of Portland defense but this really did make me laugh aloud.
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson calls Sunday's naked bike ride in protest of the Portland ICE facility and and Trump troop deployment "the most threatening thing I’ve seen yet"

Food aid helps farmers on the production side and rural people in blue AND red states on the consumption side. Read this to learn details. If you can, donate to ProPublica - they do amazing work.
The US ag system has been dominated by white rich people forever. The kakistocracy is making it worse.
Records obtained by ProPublica indicate that food banks across the country were expecting more than 27 million pounds of chicken, 2 million gallons of milk, 10 million pounds of dried fruit and 60 million eggs that never arrived.

I’m no Newsom fanboy, but figuring out how to change the incentives of institutions considering capitulation is one of the big tasks of our moment.
Gavin Newsom announces that any California university that caves to Trump and signs his “loyalty pledge” will be immediately defunded.

“CALIFORNIA WILL NOT BANKROLL SCHOOLS THAT SELL OUT THEIR STUDENTS.”

Ta-Nehasi Coates is doing a lot of things with this essay, but one of the most important is fearlessly using examples of anti-trans hate to describe Charlie Kirk's politics.

The contrast between his choices and those of other writers for major legacy outlets is revealing.
Charlie Kirk, Redeemed: A Political Class Finds Its Lost Cause
By ignoring the rhetoric and actions of the Turning Point USA founder, pundits and politicians are sanitizing his legacy.
