Chopped vegetables for tomorrow’s soup and the new glove saved a finger when a potato got ornery.

You can never go wrong buying me books or miscellaneous kitchen gear.
Some year I will get through a holiday season without hacking into my left thumb.

Not this year, though.

( I was even gifted a knife proof glove for Christmas! A very thoughtful gift! And I forgot I had it.)

Now past 10 AM, still no statement from the Prime Minister’s Office
8:30 AM, and still no statement from Canada’s prime minister

Perhaps the Governor General should knock on the door of Rideau Cottage to make sure he too was not kidnapped by the US military overnight?
"Mexico strongly condemns and rejects the military actions carried out unilaterally ... by armed forces of the United States of America against targets in the territory of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in clear violation of Article 2 of the [UN] Charter"

I love Tragically Hip, but “Courage” is a stupid choice for a goal song by the Canadian Juniors. It’s not really a cheerful song.

And, with it now 4-0 in the first period, I will be very sick of what is, a good tune.

It's always a little unfair to overbake a quickly tossed-off skeet, but this is a distillation of an idea I see circulating a *lot* in lefty spaces. The context of what Mamdani was saying is in the alt-text; he's obviously being much more nuanced than saying "individualism must end."

But must it?

Tonight, prime rib with family. The beef took longer to cook than expected, as usual, but it turned out very nicely.

It's worth reading the whole interview in full. It basically verifies that the NYT has spent the past decade-plus doubling down on top-down narratives for coverage, getting more intense over time.

Sulzberg personally picked & chose whom the news apparatus would target and whom it would kiss up to.
In this in-depth interview Billie Jean Sweeney — a former editor at The New York Times — details how the paper shifted towards openly promoting anti-trans hatred, why this was directed from the very top, how some staff pushed back and the immense damage done by the NYT legitimizing bigotry.

As a national broadcaster, the CBC New Year show is thrown from region to region, managed from a Toronto hub.

Absolutely nobody looks warm, and the comms delay between Toronto and Iqaluit is almost quaint.
