"Starting this year the so-called 'media traffic apocalypse' caused by Google's pivot to AI search has cut our ad revenue by 70%. Prior to that, Facebook and X's deprioritization of links hurt too, but I can't downplay the brutal impact of AI Overview."

they were called "MMOs" once and you found success through lots of single-player content, deep systems appealing to both singletons and groups, support for guild drama, and customer service that wasn't akin to getting a root canal, none of which seems to have made the transition to "live service"
How on earth do you find lasting, meaningful success with a live-service game? Developers answer the "billion dollar question". https://bit.ly/47xnpSv

Buried in the Doug Ford govt's fall budget are changes that would remove parts of Wasaga beach from provincial protection. As I reported in August, those parts are 60% of the world’s longest freshwater beach and the main nesting area for the endangered piping plover: thenarwhal.ca/wasaga-beach...

the drummer, Barry Keane, is also the drummer on "OK Blue Jays," on Anne Murray's top-selling album "Let's Keep It That Way" ("You Needed Me"), and oh yeah on Shania Twain's demo tape that got her the Mercury Nashville contract in 1992
today I learned the released version of the song was take one, the first time the band ever actually played the song, and the drummer had never heard it before? unreal
The Edmund Fitzgerald sank 50 years ago today. The next year, the singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot chronicled the tragedy in an unlikely hit single.

Happy Monday. LinkedIn is telling me I should follow Mark Carney on their platform.

I already follow him here and he is in my face all the time telling me that things will be better if we do less.

I will learn nothing new on LinkedIn, the site where I read and delete invitations once a month.

HT to @dansuitor.bsky.social; the DOJ indictment against Clase and Ortiz has been unsealed. Not only were they rigging pitches for outside bettors based on Ball/Strike and pitch speed over/unders; they were sometimes betting on their own rigged pitches.

Clausewitz was deeply emotionally affected by witnessing famine in the Rhineland, describing skeletal figures scrounging for underripe potatoes that were no doubt already ruined by the blight. It is a crowning achievement of our society to have solved this problem that plagued countless generations.
it drives me actually insane to have people romanticizing subsistence agriculture as if that's not just playing russian roulette with your family's lives year by year, and that every single one of their ancestors would throttle them for suggesting giving up their email jobs

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

I had a rule that I could only buy a book after I’d finished two on my shelf.

I have been much better about buying books now that I don’t live a block away from a bookstore, but I still struggle to stick to the rule.
I am not allowed to buy more books until I read the ones I already own

These new details from last summer's confrontation between Rob Manfred and Bryce Harper are absolutely insane.

MLB officials threatening players will "end up in a ditch" for disrespecting Manfred is outrageous behavior.

There’s an episode of Babylon 5 where Garibaldi takes great measures to secure the ingredients for bagna cauda, which is a hot anchovy and garlic dipping sauce.

He talks about it like it’s a rare delicacy, but the recipe seems very easy.

Anyone out there make this? Good for holiday variety?

There is so much wrong her (the uncanny face, for one) but what gets me is the vibe of 'this impossible thing, having a woman say she'll love you forever and mean it,' - a thing very many, if not most straight men achieve in ceremonies performed in front of all of their friends and family.
Elon has never experienced this and neither have his biggest fans but now they can create these visuals with the help of a computermachine
