They always want to “save classics!” until they find that it’s only by heavily redacting Greco-Roman literature (e.g. cut out the gayness!) that they get what they call “western civ.” It’s all a ridiculous game of omission.

Reading about hockey great Angela James and I’m sure this was a very common issue for girls in hockey of her age.

I appreciate the effort, but I am sure that Bo will have no trouble finding a steakhouse wherever he goes.

(Note, I have never been to Animl Steakhouse and I am not sure I could afford it. I can also not play second base.

I just watched "Downey Wrote That," a documentary about the legendary comedy writer Jim Downey from SNL and Letterman. It talks about his love of the comedy of laboriously explaining things that don't require any explanation, as in this beautiful example: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vooe...

Once I was taking the train from Montreal to Miramichi and was seated beside an old man who spent hours trying to convince me that the Pope ruled the world via a secret submarine base under the Vatican.

So, maybe?

New year, new month, new week.

Back to my desk today, and it’s mostly organizing for the quarter.

I am already tired.

The reason I love this Reductress joke is that it gets to the essence of what "The Doomscroll" actually is.

It's not simply a parade of disinterestedly reported news stories with sober headlines about tragedies. It's everyone else's *commentary* about them.

i think this site really needs to figure out how to grow the non-politics verticals (the baseball moment was a good thing!) because i suspect a lot of the bad clusters come out of the political clusters driving 95% of ENG-lang posts
I'd be happy with big non politics accounts.

Many, many people will nod along somberly to this skeet and then wake up tomorrow and say "okay, but this *specific* trans woman actually, totes for reals deserves it."

There's always going to be an exception to the rule that keeps the cycle going.
Every mob that has ever run a trans woman off of socials has had a "valid reason" why they deserved it. But it's still systemic and endemic.

Because mound charges peaked in the 80s, this entire series is “Remember Some Guys TV” for me.

I was 13 when Bell charged Kison, and I remember the moment but had no knowledge of a lot of Kison’s history.
now up:
THE HISTORY OF CHARGING THE MOUND, EPISODE 3

this one’s about Bruce Kison, a guy i knew almost nothing about when i started this series but who ended up getting the longest episode so far

As a teen in northern Ontario in the early 1990s, the excitement of the drive down to Toronto began somewhere around Orillia when you could pick up the CFNY signal on the car stereo and plug into a whole wider world of music that had not yet reached you in the sticks. Keen to see this!
In 1976, CFNY launched from a small suburban house just north of Toronto and went on to become one of the most influential punk, new wave, and alternative radio stations in the world.

"CFNY: The Spirit of Radio" premieres tomorrow at 9pm on TVO.

A reminder that as long as the US is in NATO, Article 5 cannot/will not be "invoked."

It takes consensus and any member, especially its biggest and most powerful, can block consensus.

But, yeah, the Danes are very, very concerned and rightly so.
this is an incredibly crucial, terrifying point
Can we just stop and put this into perspective:

Our Scandinavian allies put out joint statements today condemning the United States, and Denmark went as far as explicitly threatening military action while hinting at a potential invocation of Article 5.

That’s genuinely fucking insane.

Our big look at why clickbait articles on accessibility at airports are ill-informed or wrong and, frankly, often tinged with racism.

The air industry has a duty to call this out, and admit it contributes to the perception by creating airport environments hostile to even minor mobility issues.

I will reiterate that if you are an independent journo/hobbyist I will happily set up your ghost install and host it for a few quid above cost price.

You set up your own stripe and mailgun accounts, and you get to keep ALL your revenue.

And post migration from wordpress/substack is pretty easy.
If there is one resolution I want for journalists this year: it is to get off S*bstack and use Ghost or any other indy publishing platform that does not fund literal nazis instead.

we also really need to prevent the mindset that posting is a form of political action, short of actually going outside, because so many people think aggro'ing enemies online is the same as building a public, imo
tbc i’m not endorsing this model but it’s as Sharon says: the natural cost of short-form communication in a forum with immense reach.

the fact that this reach spans conflicting ideologies and different languages makes the problem worse, even without the pressure cooker of current events.
i think it's just the dynamics of short-form microblogging in general tbh. people find it a lot easier to misread things on here or aggro people they wouldn't do on other platforms
