"Jenn, why are you so hard on AI 'art'?"

Because, as I've stated repeatedly, any single stick person has more character & heart than any fake slop 💖

Also, hey, gotta love the extra effort to keep things to scale ^_^

Because it's not like I am going to buy another Dutch oven.

Happy birthday to the Soviet linguist Yuri Knorozov who casually deciphered the Mayan script in 1952 and got pissed when editors removed his cat as co-author on papers or cropped her out of his author headshot (the only picture of himself he even liked)

Tonight on Ken Burns's American Revolution, Rick Atkinson is going is going to tell you:

"Muskets are mostly inaccurate beyond 80 yards...so a lot of the killing is done with the bayonet... this is really eyeball to eyeball."

The trouble is, this just isn't true. 🧵1/16

believing in antivax stuff is the surest sign you’re a dumbass. On one side, you have all of medical science, the eradication of illnesses, the gift of mRNA during a pandemic. On the other, you have one debunked study by a guy who was trying to invent an illness to sell a cure, and Jenny McCarthy

Mo'ne Davis spent years telling people that she was done playing baseball. She did not want to be forever defined by what she did as a 13-year-old in Little League, a decade ago, and she did not feel like there was space for her to do much else. And then she felt differently. On Davis and the WPBL:
Mo’ne Davis Is Finally Ready to Play Baseball Again
More than a decade after becoming a Little League sensation at age 13, Mo’ne Davis is set to make more history as the face of the Women’s Pro Baseball League.

"The US could have been Canada!" No. Not to sound overly American, but the War of Independence really is a pivotal hinge point in history, b/c if it doesn't happen what's the finical state of France, and thus, the timeline of the French Revolution?
I think a major reason why people think this is because Britain ended slavery in their colonies before the US. However I don't think people really consider what effect the enormous wealth coming in from the South would do to the alternate British when considering what to do about slavery.
This is a idea that needs to die. There is absolutely no evidence absent the Revolution that things would have worked out the exact same way as they did historically. A lot of how Canada became Canada is directly as a result of the Revolution, because the British didn’t want to lose Canada.

Arguably my favorite Christmas movie, and an always welcome reminder of the echoing value of small deeds done with a good heart.
For reasons I needed to watch Its a Wonderful Life again last night.

Will do a thread closer to Christmas about it, but next time you watch it, remember this:

Both Capra and Stewart had just come back from WW2. Consider every directing, script and acting decision with that context in mind.

TIL there is a baseball trophy called the Hutch Award given to players who ""best exemplify fighting spirit and competitive desire" of Fred Hutchison, a manager who died of cancer in 1964.

It has not been awarded since 2019, except for the honorary recognition of Anthony Fauci in 2022.

This is fascinating! Semiyarka has been found to be an ancient city in Kazakhstan, specializing in production of tin-bronze, and contemporary with the Late Bronze Age kingdoms (Kassite Babylonia, Mittani, Hatti, New Kingdom Egypt, Mycenaean Greece, etc) in the Middle East and Mediterranean.
Archaeologists have unearthed a Bronze Age metropolis in the heart of the Eurasian steppe: an early form of city as complex as those of contemporary, more traditionally 'urban' civilisations, showing how steppe polities were just as sophisticated.
