Key distinction number two: journalism vs. the media (vs. the press)

I think of the media as the attention business, an industry whose product is audiences.

Journalism is a social practice, the purpose of which is to keep publics informed and hold power to account. 7/

Agree--the Liz Cheney swing voter crap and the celeb crap was a huge ❓. Was Harris really into that? (Her book has no answer.) Cheney turned people off, no one I spoke with found it either genuine or persuasive. No excuses for the nonvoters, but Dems must respond to the inertia factor.
"Voters who sat out [2024] crave more differentiation, not less, and a grander vision of an economic and political system that they could thrive within." A barn burner from @jenancona.bsky.social on the need for Dems to go BIG to win.

We need the power to do it.
People successfully asked this of Dem candidates leading up to 2022 and were closer than we've ever been to having a caucus that favored court reform.

The time to ask for it/demand it (again), is now.
Alito is basically daring Democrats to reform the Court. And yet!

Once again the fixation is on Trump alone. This is not Trump's doing. This is the grand plan of the Republican party. Aided by a subservient press, including the NYTimes. What will Dems do?

If you have any MAGA in your life who approve of Trump’s immoral & barbaric war against immigrants, share a copy of this essay by Ammon Bundy, a famous anti-government right wing activist. I was impressed & surprised by his thoughtful arguments. www.peoplesrights.ws/asset/news/a...

Sent an email to my Rep this morning and encourage all to follow suit--Republicans and Democrats. The GOP is concerned about this moment after the upset by a Dem in Texas. Same with the lame-ass corporate DNC Democrats--they will want to look like they're on the winning side. #impeachTrump

Lawler. The GOP toady in NY-17. In the replies a video shows another vet, standing behind this veteran. The public announcer asks for videos to stop--"some in the audience are not comfortable being on video". No, Lawler knows this looks bad.
BREAKING:

GOP Rep. Mike Lawler held a town hall tonight in Rockland County…and proceeded to have VETERANS thrown out of the venue.

Amy @amyklobuchar.com, do you see how ridiculous your consultant speak is in this moment?

The guy kicking this ICE agents hat & the people whistling to shame these monsters—that’s what we need more of.

That’s Governor material.

Do better. It’s not too late. Fire your consultants & start over.

The handwritten note from Rep. @joaquincastrotx.bsky.social is terrific. Why on earth did ICE take him? Gratuitous cruelty, which has backfired. NOTE: don't let them bury it in a happy ending tale. There are more Liams who need help. Keep filming, again and again. Every video is a step forward.
Yesterday, five-year-old Liam and his dad Adrian were released from Dilley detention center. I picked them up last night and escorted them back to Minnesota this morning.

Liam is now home. With his hat and his backpack.

Here ⤵️⤵️ is the point, for those still shouting it's a waste. First, just force the GOP to vote. Make its no vote, aka Trxmp endorsement, CRYSTAL clear. Hell, if they're so powerless, what else is there? Fundraise? Issue statements? No. Create tactical advantage, as they did with the Epstein files.
That is why strategically selective impeachment matters, even when you "fail" to win conviction and removal. In fact, failing to get conviction and removal may be the whole point, if you want to portray your opposition as unwilling or unable to address real wrongs.

I will say again, for the people in the back: the art of politics in a democracy is not merely counting votes. It is reframing issues in a way that CHANGES votes. It is making the case for what is impossible today, so it becomes more possible tomorrow.

Reason to keep working. Authoritarian, ironically, need the public to buy into their system or feel alone and afraid.
POWERFUL: With snow falling in freezing weather in Chicago last night, the massive anti-ICE/Border Patrol rally wrapped up in front of City Hall as the energized crowd chanted, "I believe that we will win!"

Meanwhile, these anti-democratic assholes.

Sulzberger in the damn files, apparently more important / embarrassing than "All the News That's Fit to Print". Own your shame. Bear the responsibility you brought upon yourself and the company that gave you access to Epstein in the first place.
No mention of Epstein on Page One.

This Epstein drop is HUGE and utterly disgusting. I don’t see how this man is allowed to remain in office. Where are the evangelical leaders, the soccer moms, the folks stocking up on eggs, the farmers, the small business owners.

Decide. Who are you?

At least one politician is looking to benefit workers instead of corporate earnings. More of this please.
Corporations will not exploit working people in NYC.

Uber Eats, Fantuan & HungryPanda broke the law — shortchanging workers while raking in profits.

Today, we secured $5M+ in restitution for 49,000 delivery workers.

Let this be a warning: steal wages, face the consequences.
January 30, 2026 at 9:25 PM
Hell yes.
this is going to happen and when it does it our solemn duty to remind the world that dash sulzberger is in the epstein files
when all of this gets slightly less heated the NYT is going to be profiling anonymous ICE agents like they’re regretful Trump voters just you watch

Being super, super, predictably wrong about congestion pricing
A strange but true finding about NYC congestion pricing:

Drivers’ time savings have overwhelmingly gone to those traveling *outside* the toll zone (i.e., driving from Brooklyn to Queens or within NJ) – not those headed into Manhattan.
