Hardly new or surprising at this point, but it's still so crazy how the US president goes to bat for Russia, aping the Russian government's propaganda, lying to the world on a Russian dictator's behalf, and trying to help Russian military aggression succeed against a US-partnered European democracy.
Trump: "Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed. It sounds a little strange but President Putin was very generous in his feeling toward Ukraine succeeding, including supplying energy, electricity and other things at very low prices."

Underlying this was that Pelosi / Dem leadership immediately gave up on pursuing Jan 6 impeachment as a serious attempt to obtain conviction. No Republican managers was another aspect of that. Delaying the Senate trial was another.

Maybe would have failed anyway, but they decided not to really try.
I’m sorry, this is just not correct. There were members that wanted to impeach Trump on Jan. 6.

Many people said if you waited, GOP outrage would fade. It did.

Pelosi spent days only cautiously committing to impeach, and fussing around with absurd stuff like 25th Amendment remedies.
McConnell adjourned the senate for two weeks the next day. There was no slow walk and this idea that republicans could have been tricked into being good but we just decided not to is giving them an out they don’t deserve.

Before every meeting or even phone call with Zelinskyy, Trump first calls Putin. That should tell you something.

It is a strictly one-way street since he never calls Zelinskyy, EU leaders, or anyone else before talking with Putin.

Clearly, Putin's approval matters to him.

Not at all weird
Trump's DOJ was monitoring all the movements of the Miami Herald reporter who was covering the Epstein case.

Honestly, this.
If you're going to drop into every post and reply "So what? Who's going to do something about it?", the answer is YOU. YOU are going to do something about it. YOU are the consequences. Stop waiting for someone else to save you.

This is no doubt what Jeffries wants and plans. It was also what Pelosi thought about it after 2018, and that didn’t survive contact with the reality that Trump inevitably does crimes so outrageously anti-constitutional that not impeaching him becomes untenable.

She caved, and so will Jeffries.
Every couple weeks Mike Johnson will warn Republicans that Democrats will impeach Trump if they take the House. My expectation: Jeffries won't want another go-nowhere impeachment, will want Raskin/Garcia to probe Trump admin with more results, but Al Green types will issue buzzy impeachment resos.

I wonder if impeaching a president for obvious and very public crimes versus literally nothing might impact how the public receives it.

If I recall correctly, Trump LOST the election after he was impeached

Impeachment is far from the only thing that should happen in the next (or this) Congress, but none of the arguments for why it'd be an unpopular thing to do or politically backfire somehow have any real factual basis or persuasive theory behind them. The whole backlash idea is just flat-out untrue.

This was in Sept. and he hasn't gotten any more popular since then.

But also... the swing districts just aren't that different from national opinion. Gerrymandering doesn't change it *that* much, we're talking a point or two. It's not as if they're double digits to the right of the median American.
This isn't even true! A plurality (approx 1/2, within the margin of error) of voters in swing DISTRICTS support impeachment! freespeechforpeople.org/poll-a-plura...

It's true Dems need to flip a bunch of districts Trump won in 2024... and Trump is *a lot* more unpopular now. Those are not pro-Trump districts anymore, it's not like the voters you need to pick up are Trump supporters. They're people who already regret voting for and now disapprove of him.

Exactly, bring it. Oh no a corrupt person has to leave office? Don't threaten me with a good time bsky.app/profile/cjci...
My favorite response is “oh how are you gonna feel when it’s your president? We’ll see then.“

I wish every president got impeached and removed. I’d throw a fucking party every time it happened.
The popular idea is that removing a president to replace him with a non-criminal president from his party, and usually elected on his ticket, is a coup.

Do governors/mayors get replaced by number 2s all the time? Yes. There's poli sci work on this, the power of the presidency blinds people.

I’ve seen no serious engagement from senior Dems about what, exactly, they plan to do in terms of reasserting congressional power, as in identifying the available tools and thinking seriously about ways to use them to dig us out of the current state of total constitutional collapse.
Pelosi: "Right now, Republicans in Congress have abolished the Congress. They just do what the president insists that they do. That will be over as soon as we have the gavel."

The Democrats who fight are us: @owillis.bsky.social, @indivisible.org, #NoKings, @citizensimpeachment.com, the grassroots. There is a lot of fight from the democratic base. It is the leadership — people like Gillibrand, Biden, and Jeffries — that roll over and cling to the status quo.

But if you believe otherwise, that’s fine by me. I’m up for thinking together, including in disagreement, but I’m not here to fight other people opposed to fascism. I’ve been reporting on fascism long enough to know fascists count on that.

Fascism, as the song goes, is bound to lose. But believing that—knowing that—doesn’t mean you believe any old strategy will work. I don’t believe Schumerism will work. I don’t believe civil war will work. I favor popular fronts, local & mass organizing, vibrant democratic culture, long haul work.

Trump's net worth increased by $4 billion. All of the wealth was gained by manipulating his power as president. Nothing like this has ever happened before.

I just taught my lecture course on mid-20th c US history, which starts with Harding and concludes with Nixon.

For the first time, I had to pause and stress that those scandals were actually shocking at the time and, what’s more, that Americans actually demanded people be held accountable.
All of the money that changed hands in the Teapot Dome scandal totaled less than $10 million after adjusting for inflation, and it was considered so corrupt we still teach it in high school government classes a century later.
Corruption so pungent, it wafts right off the page:

Lobbyists who do pardon deals “say their going rate is $1 million. Pardon-seekers have offered some lobbyists close to the president success fees of as much as $6 million if they can close the deal.”

It’s hard to believe that one man can cause so much stress, so much fear, so much pain and suffering…a man who took an oath to preserve and protect our Constitution. This man, who is inciting terror across our land, must be removed from office. In a sane world, it would happen immediately.
