It's been wonderful - & heartbreaking - to meet so many lovely Altadena and N. Pasadena folks who've been affected by the Eaton fire. Thank you for sharing with a bear...

Also, thanks to folks who were out to help - LA Co. Public Health, Red Cross, Army Corps of Eng., CA Nat'l Guard, and more.
Met this Bear while protesting to save the wildlands of Chaney Trail last autumn. The trail was incinerated last month. But its chaparral will grow again. And the Bear, like its native wildland, is standing strong. Thank you, dear friend Bear. #DenaStrong

If folks haven't read it, I recommend @annaleen.bsky.social's Stories are Weapons, which is unfortunately more and more relevant during this administration. When I started it, I thought, "yeah yeah, I know this." But each chapter was 🤯; well researched analysis of these tactics, recent & historical.

"Instead of making forecasts, the USGS could help to improve building codes and to plan the government's response to the next large earthquake. Bay Area residents should take reasonable precautions [...] they should largely ignore the USGS probability forecast."

The mythology of pure merit and academia finally in tatters.

I hope this is the end of the “I know him and he is always been anything but nice to me” cliché.
Mainstream news covered the Jeffrey Epstein emails related to ppl like Trump. Today, I want to take a look at Epstein's correspondence with prominent atheist and physicist Lawrence Krauss, who asked the pedophile's advice on responding to accusations of sexual assault skepchick.org/2025/11/so-i...

Happy #FossilFriday! This tooth plate is from a giant fossil lungfish called Ceratodus. This specimen is thought to be from the Mesozoic Era and is estimated to be up to 13 feet long! Lungfish have been around for nearly 400 million years, and are one of the closest living relatives to tetrapods!🦎

🐻Happy #FossilFriday! This canine tooth was found at the bottom of Lake Bronson Reservoir in northern MN after draw down for dam replacement. Flagged in a pedestrian survey, likely from an American black bear (Ursus americanus). The site is pre-contact Native American, submerged nearly 90 years.

The seabed rarely consists solely of bare sand: often other materials, such as shells are present. Kooistra et al., show shells have marked effects on bed roughness and sand transport 🐚 🌊

We often discuss the threat of ocean acidification (and climate change) on shallow #reefs, but it does not spare deep reefs. As the ocean acidifies, the aragonite saturation horizon shallows, and with it the zone many reefs can inhabit. 🧪🌊

This meets the the most standard definition of tool use used in primatology (Beck 1980), and it surprises me how many don’t think it qualifies as tool use 🧪
A female wolf has been doing something unusual on the Central Coast of British Columbia. She's learned to pull crab traps up from the water, yanking on a rope to bring it to the surface. But is it tool use? Very fun story from @phiejacobs.bsky.social for @science.org
Have wild wolves learned to use tools?
Video captures a lone female pulling crab traps out of the water, but does it count as tool use?

People have largely tried to act like ICE/CBP failed and retreated from LA and that is completely untrue. If it weren’t for the relentless coverage of places like @lataco.bsky.social these stories would be completely under the radar.
ICE has been raiding my neighborhood and surrounding ones for the last couple of weeks now. They commandeered my local church (against the pastor's will) for a staging site and raided supermarkets, parks, Goodwills, bus stops, you name it.

The national media's been silent. So has @mayor.lacity.gov.
Engagement on our updates re: ICE kidnappings/fed siege of Los Angeles is significantly lower on Bluesky compared to Twitter. Do ppl on here not care about LA anymore? Are feeds being taken over by liberal commentators? What's going on?

Community members on the ground can't do it all. We need help.

I'm not a lawyer but this seems like its a violation of the Article I, Section 9, Clause 3 of the constitution. It would be an ex post facto law that retrospectively changes the legal consequences of action that happened before the enactment of the law.
