Someone is determined to show off that she can still do steps. She also got a bath for the first time in over a month.

It's a #GarWeek #FossilFriday! Here's some of the ganoid scales off of gar that we routinely find when scouting in the Hell Creek. So far only 1 complete gar skeleton has been found in the HCF, and I found it a full 10 years before I found my first Tyrannosaurus.

Now it's time to play the guessing game of "How long will it take for me to get out of customs at Heathrow so I can book a bus ride"
1 hour? 2?

So the oncologist said "Huh. That's WEIRD".
Chondrosarcoma, which is rare, but set up in the head of the humerus, which is super weird to be in a long bone.
Best case is 2 to 5 more years with a tripod dog.
Also New Idiot Dog still loves treats.

GE CF6-80 engine failure again? wouldn't be surprised if a disk came apart like on the AA 767 that went up in flames in Chicago in 2016, or the one in 2006 (luckily those were on the ground)

ID help needed from dinosaur nerds!
I found this theropod manus claw in the Judith River Formation and few weeks back. What does it belong to? A bit narrow for tyrannosaur, a bit large for Dromaeosaur. I'm thinking some sort of oviraptorid maybe. What do you all think?

Also an update on New Idiot Dog: starting to make it up some stairs now, even without harness help.
When we rescued her 6 years ago she had never seen stairs and didn't understand them. Still not an expert but getting by now

A throwback #MosasaurMonday from working at ho me during the early days of the pandemic.
This Mosasaurus skull was in hundreds of fragments, except for the parts that were in a solid concretion. Once it was all prepped and put back together, it went into a proper cradle before heading to Prague.

Hrrm. So could these tracks we recovered from the upper Hell Creek decades ago possibly be from a Nanotyrannus instead of the hypothetical giant Ovi/Struthio?

Giant Oviraptor Tracks from the Hell Creek

Happy that a rational and reasonable look at Hell Creek tyrannosaur taxonomy has finally come out

My latest for @nytimes.com! For 40 years, paleontologists have grappled over whether a small tyrannosaur — named Nanotyrannus — was its own animal, or simply a teenage T.rex. The debate has been ... contentious. Which is why it's so fun to finally be able to say this:
Folks? Nanotyrannus is real.

In 2018 I got to visit the Tufts Love T.rex while it was still on its dinosaur-sized rotisserie in the old Burke Museum building. What a beast.

Thinking back to the spring with the cutest little Tylosaurus skull I've seen in the past few years. Just look at that stubby little rostrum (no shade, he's trying his best)
Based on strat location in the Niobrara, it's probably a juvenile T. kansasensis. Can't wait to see this one get prepped 🧪
