re-reading Bird by Bird (Anne Lamott) and this quote feels extremely relevant for current times:

"... there's no point in writing hopeless novels. We all know we're going to die; what's important is the kind of men and women we are in the face of this."

These men hate the left, labor organizing, feminism, #metoo, and human rights movements because all of these are pushing for equality and accountability, presenting a threat to these men's ability to dominate and abuse with impunity.

would love to hear from other midwesterners, but to me a porch is fully enclosed and a patio is completely open. A deck is a raised wooden patio. My porch, on the back of my house, opens onto my patio. I call it my "back porch" because porches can be in the front or the back of the house.
let me start an entirely inconsequential debate: are patios ALWAYS on the back of your place, vs. are porches ALWAYS on the front?

Like if I say "i'm on my porch," I 100% mean I'm on the front of my place, if I say "I'm on my patio" I think I could credibly be in front or behind (but mostly behind)

Not to be too vulnerable on main, but I think what is really upsetting and ultimately hurtful to me about the Stancil stuff is that a lot of us (especially women) have put in a ton of work slowly, unglamorously trying to build the sorts of organizing frameworks that made his adventurism possible.

this particular line is maybe the best statement of purpose i have seen for those of us who want a more militant opposition to this administration
“Let us be clear: we want the power of the state. We wish to hold the criminals of the regime accountable. We wish to seize back the public funds looted by Trump and his cronies. We wish to undo the damage he has done to the government. More than any of that we wish to rebuild.”
From Powerlessness to Power
We will not achieve any of our ultimate goals without exercising state power, and the most effective way to take state power is through nonviolent but confrontational resistance.

Abolish ICE. Medicare for All.
BREAKING: Bernie Sanders is introducing an amendment to cut ICE’s $75 billion funding increase, and to use those funds to restore the federal cuts to health care.

It is sunny and 20 degrees here on the west side of the state and everyone in my neighborhood is losing their minds (in a good way)
In the Mitten right now, it’s possible to step outside and not have your nose hairs freeze or your glasses freeze to the bridge of said nose. Sun is shining. Sky is an incredible Pure Michigan blue. Who knows what tomorrow’s weather will bring, but we survived Jan. Spring is on the way. :)

Epstein’s economic power among academics was made possible by a capitalist system that makes higher education dependent on the charity economy rather than a public good supported by taxing the rich

as I age, I've finally learned that one of the keys to fulfillment is embracing the feeling of being bad at something you love. it reveals that joy comes from the *process* of creation and not from the outcome, and THAT realization has so many other trickle down effects.
We are going to miss out on so much great art because of AI. People have ideas for X—a song, a comic, etc.—and they use AI because “I can’t play/draw. If it weren’t for AI it would never get made” BUT THAT ISNT TRUE. There is such joy in art that is made by beginners who just needed to make X

there is no such thing as an ethical billionaire
The Epstein emails should really end the debate over whether society should have billionaires. "Do you want there to be a class of people so powerful they can fuck your kids and no one will even try to do anything" seems like an easy sell if everyone in politics wasn't trying to get on their payroll

15 degrees and sunny today, so I was able to go for a walk and feel the winter sun on the two square inches of my body that were actually exposed.

college should be free, and the pursuit of education simply for the sake of learning and exploring and expanding your world view should be encouraged and respected.
This trend is giving me life. College is cool, knowledge is great. The liberal arts is rad. Being well rounded is the GOAT.

Fund all colleges and universities. We should be throwing money at them. Make it affordable for all. Let people take underwater basket weaving if they choose.
Never mind the jobs you had, tell me five classes you took in college:
1. Marine Biology (we got to go out on a boat!)
2. The History of the Holocaust
3. Logic and Critical Thinking
4. Eastern Religions
5. The French Revolution

it is a wild sickness to try and find evidence or reason for why someone's life should have value to the state. When lives are ended by cops in the street the defence is always that they were peaceful and law abiding, as if the opposite would mean they somehow deserved what bullets claimed them.

how about we don't fund ICE at all, under any condition?
America does not want us to fund a lawless out of control ICE.

- No more roving patrols or profiling. ICE/CBP are not trained to do this. And it's wrong. Require warrants.
- No more secret police. Take off the masks. Show ID.
- And real accountability for murder and assault.
