Why I don’t buy from SHEIN.
The people who make Shein's clothes labor for ten to twelve hours per day (in violation of China's labor laws), some up to seven days a week, and earn as little as 15 to 30 cents per t-shirt.

I know that at this point it's a subplot in the Epstein files drama, but I feel compelled to point out, once again, that Larry Summers HAS NO BUSINESS teaching students at ANY university ever again!

My latest cries into the abyss, in @thenation.com

Why Is Larry Summers Still Employed?
The revelations about the economist’s attempts to pressure a women into a “relationship”—with guidance from Jeffrey Epstein—should finally disqualify him from teaching students.

Academia is a really racist and sexist place. Larry Summers, as the president of Harvard, epitomized that racism and sexism but he is not unique. That's why we needed DEI.

KEEP THIS PREDATOR AWAY FROM STUDENTS.

How is he not immediately on Admin leave pending investigation, at a minimum?

I am now fully jokerfied. 💀
Given that the emails in question were about him exploiting his position against a junior-scholar mentee, he should not be allowed within a million miles of a classroom and should not be allowed to serve on any dissertation committees, etc etc etc.
Larry Summers tells @theharvardcrimson.bsky.social
he’s stepping back from all public commitments in light of his messages with Epstein, saying he is “deeply ashamed” and hopes “to rebuild trust and repair relationships.”

He will continue teaching.

The neoliberal countries are under tremendous stress because the "market economics" experiment produced terrible inequality. These countries refuse to tax the rich. So cost of living increases while public services & healthcare etc decline.

Politicians point to immigrants and other scapegoats.

If women are underrepresented in STEM, it's at least partly because men like this offer mentoring, then embarrass themselves by assuming their mentees must be into them, then decide the best solution is to cut ties, which sends the signal to other faculty that the mentee must not be good enough.
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

Yes. And I'm careful to say "online discourse" because actual educators typically do not think like Josh does. Unfortunately many politicians and powerful people listen more to guys like Josh than to actual educators! bsky.app/profile/cars...
I work at a university and this guy is a massive asshole who would be laughed out of any room with actual educators in it. Accommodations help people succeed and are available to every student. It’s GOOD that people do better when they have support.

the Democratic Party should have 2 major goals for the next time it holds power: (1) completely rebuild the destroyed federal government capacity, and (2) crush the GOP, which enabled so much corruption and immiseration. destroy their funding, jail their leaders, make it so a new party has to emerge

My annual warning
DO NOT call up the homeless shelter on thanksgiving or Xmas to see if you can pass a few plates and show your kids the “reason for the season”

The homeless shelter is not a petting zoo of human tragedy! The homeless shelter is not a drive thru nativity scene for you to enjoy!

Honestly, until like the 1970s or 1980s, people have held the attitude that adult men having sex with teenagers is "normal" and "biologically wired." They still believe it, they just learned to stop talking about it openly at some point.

@chrislhayes.bsky.social they do it because they're like him. Like recognizes like and protects it. The men who sheltered Epstein don't see anything wrong with what he did. They also did it. Or approved of it.
Something that’s so striking in these emails is how…unimpressive Epstein is. He comes off as a pompous, sub-literate lech. Yes everyone is so mortifyingly solicitous of him! All fawning and flattery! Why?????
