There is a difference between "different political views" and "fundamentally incompatible senses of morality, justice, and values". The US, by having a two-party system, elides those two things.

Everyone has a list of so-called "red flags" when they're dating. And for some, especially younger Americans, different political views is a relationship deal breaker.

If it was it would never have happened.

You’ll see some comprehensive reviews of Trump’s all-out attacks on trans ppl in ‘25. I’m going ask you to keep the words below in mind. Think of them as an admission from his co-conspirator, the nyt:

“To get on the wrong side of transgender activists is often to endure their unsparing criticism”

It’s not.

The Labour Party are run by terrible people with their own interests at heart.

They kicked out anyone opposed to that - people who wanted to work toward the benefit of the nation.

They solidified their own careers outside of/after politics.

They embolden fascism.
Mind bogglingly low.

Duncan has turned the replies off, which suggests hes not actually interested in the answers being provided to him.

Britain's commentariat write a lot about group think, echo chambers and herd mentality. Yet when they look in the mirror they only see perfection.
Glad the FT is asking the question. Even if I’m not convinced they found a compelling answer.
I get that Starmer & Reeves are unpopular, I really don’t understand the extent of the dislike.

There aren't many things that unite the politics of Starmer's predecessors as either Labour lesder or PM - but one that does is a sense the job was to deliver *something* for their people, even if they defined that group very differently. You do actually need a base that likes and supports you!

Fascinating thread but I don't feel it's that complicated? This is what happens when you go out of your way to performatively kick your own coalition in the hope of impressing voters who never liked you to start with.

Labour turned their guns on all of their natural supporters, they even vilified and abused their own membership. They did these things to chase the votes of people that already detest them and will never vote for them.

They are now wondering why they are so unpopular.

So they're also stupid.

Most journalists take it as a given that the public are universally racist and transphobic, and try to cast any pushback to racist and transphobic policies as “extremist”. They can’t comprehend that a significant proportion of the population might be opposed to these things

Sorry (not sorry) to repeat this story:
You probably know this, but for anyone who doesn’t.

Tony Benn claimed that in 1997 “Callaghan, L” was cold called by the Labour campaign and asked "Have you ever thought of being a bit more active in politics?"

James Callaghan’s reply: “Well I was a Labour Prime Minister – what more could I do?"

Literally telling people to go elsewhere as theyre not wanted in labour lol

Maybe ask him why he said that instead of those who took what he said literally and left

It’s considerably worse than this though: all these people chose Johnson and hard Brexit as the best option to get back the thing that was most important to them: control of the Labour Party by these horrible people. They fought relentlessly to inflict that upon the public, and all for… this.
I guess if you went all in on them, your choices now are to admit you were sold a lemon or pretend to be completely baffled about why they're so unpopular. I've yet to see any pundit choose the former. That's pride for you

bcos it's so incestuous

this kid has no background in politics. no background in anything besides bouncing from one 'think tank' to the next

he's not head of fabians on merit. mommy got him the gig

whole party is like this now. nobody real is involved
The government is being squeezed between twin populisms of the right and of the left.

We need to confront both, and to deliver bold change that improves lives and tackles inequality.
