In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.
The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.
The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Scanned my handle to see if any labels were applied to me and it turns out I’m fated to die in a Boat Accident (falling overboard). I lived on a boat for six years. Have I thwarted my own destiny by returning to land? I have questions!!

The Sun has produced four moderate (M-class) solar flares today. We expect solar activity to continue increasing for the next week or so, as busy regions on the Sun rotate to face Earth!

One of my all-time fave images. See the bright star just to the upper right of the cluster? That's Sher 25 and it will explode in <40,000 years. You can see a ring and wisps of gas on either side of it; it's the same kind of star with the same structure that blew up to become Supernova 1987A.

A trio of monster active regions have rotated into view over the Sun’s eastern horizon. Whilst the front of the Sun has been quiet for a while, these regions were producing significant activity on the Sun’s backside. They will rotate to face Earth later this week. #spaceweather

This is such a fascinating and useful approach to studying modern life in low Earth orbit. There has never been an international, multidisciplinary collaborative science project anything like the ISS before, and I desperately hope it won’t be the last.

So if you're <= 24 years old, you've never lived in a world where humans were *only* terrestrial-based.
