📚 Vigil by George Saunders
📚 Slewfoot by Gerald Brom

VIGIL explores whether mulish greed deserves comfort in the end. Its attempts at humor nearly lost me, but I was won over by the fiercely human evaluation of life in the face of death. It was tender, sad, and anti late stage capitalism. Always a plus!

I used to be chronically online. Since cutting back on social media, my mental health is improving but I consistently feel out of the loop!

SLEWFOOT is dark & captivating. Dread of the unknown shifted to the horror of human nature when monsters were made from ideals. Abitha's strong will & tenacity was easy to cheer on in a community of hypocrisy. Crisp writing & high stakes made a satisfying ending.

Sorcery of Thorns introduced its fantasy world seamlessly, before pulling the reader along a bumpy plotline. While well written, poor character choices & clunky story transitions distracted me. The romance B-plot was sudden & unearned. Incredible concept with mediocre execution.

I struggle with the dark winter months.

Thankfully, we are almost through the worst of it, with lighter days and nights ahead of us 🙌🏼

Escapism feels like a threat to freedom right now. It's made it hard for me to read with all the political madness about. I could use a good book to negate the emotional burnout though.

I'm sick of female characters in fiction using a masculine standard when portraying strength. Women's strength does not need to be muscles and snark. We can be soft, calculating, protective, observant, and so many more things that should be celebrated.

"Rejection is redirection, so never give up. And you know, it's never too late to shine like you were born to be."

As said by EJAE, singer, songwriter, and Rumi's singing voice for KPOP Demon Hunters during her Golden Globe acceptance speech for winning Best Song.

Me - "Plot idea: an appointed assassin handles criminals based on his own cultural justice standards."

Husband - "Hm... Have you ever read Jade City?"

"No. My idea would be set in a metropolis with rival gangs, and there'd be fantasy elements with magic!"

"You should read Jade City..."

Our Divine Mischief was about dashed hopes leading to unexpected blessings. The Irish folklore gave the story a charming, earthy feel. The plot took an unusual but satisfying turn at the midpoint. It was adventurous & tender with the right amount of whimsy.
