In April 2024, Spotify implemented a new scheme: songs with less than 1k streams per year would no longer receive royalties.

The data for 2025 was just released via Luminate, and 88% of songs have been demonetized.

Read it again: 88% of songs on Spotify have been demonetized.

This is a Trump-style bit of intimidation for falling out of line, combined with a blatantly prejudiced and prejudicial statement by the Chief Inspector. More confirmation that Labour has zero interest in regaining any votes lost for its pro-Israel positions.

Going to do this but for all the bars in Penge
The curiosity was killing me. The guy said he found the ad on Instagram and that, as of today, the post is still up. So I spent an hour or so on a spreadsheet of every single bar, pub, or club I could find in Salt Lake City, almost 100.

None of them posted it

Shabana Mahmood thinks there was a recent Maccabi Tel Aviv fixture in Ukraine. Forensic stuff
January 14, 2026 at 5:15 PM
We were about 2 weeks from all Israeli clubs being banned from all UEFA competitions too. Extremely weird "scandal" even by the standards of the UK media-political elite
I repeat myself, and maybe it's a poverty of imagination on my part, but I simply can't envisage any circumstances where a UK Government would advocate so strongly and passionately on behalf of supporters of a UK football team.

Statement by Shabana Mahmood is blow to Craig Guildford’s chances of remaining West Midlands police chief constable

It's a funny turnaround in that PCCs were introduced because the Tories thought Labour had made the police woke and that electing local headbangers would make them all tough on crime again. Now a new generation right wing HS has decided that PCCs are making the police woke.
It is utterly ridiculous that the Home Secretary wants to reintroduce the power to sack chief constables.

Isn't she busy enough?

No other country is as centralised as Britain - this is just a small example of the utter parochialism of people like Mahmood.
NEW Shabana Mahmood announces not only that Craig Guildford, the chief constable of West Midlands Police, no longer has her confidence after a "devastating" independent review, but also that the government will reintroduce the power for home secretaries to sack chief constables

For clarity, this government has so far:
- cancelled HS2 north of Birmingham (previous government hadn't actually done that formally)
- cancelled electrification of the Midland Main Line
- cancelled West Yorkshire mass transit
- cancelled the trans-Pennine high speed line

Today's announcement is the opposite of what it says it is. It's the formal cancellation of the high speed line across the Pennines.

What's left - additional TRU scope - is a good idea but should be delivered as a business as usual enhancement in 2027, not some far off fanfaron.

I think this is the thing about most graffiti artists, they're almost always depressed Gen-Xers who think that they're Banksy rather than a failed systems analyst from Walthamstow.

I'd have resolved this in an elegant way that respected both the spirit of the original French joke and the constraints of English nomenclature I reckon
The bit on translations reminded me of Le Diner de Cons, an excellent comedy in which one joke depends on a mishearing of the name Sasseur for "sa sœur". The subtitler solved this problem by renaming the character Hissister. Pretty awkward, but hard to see what else you could do.
AGI may never happen. But in some tasks, 'as good as human' intelligence does already exist - yet there is still one vitally important thing that AI can't take, which is responsibility. Some thoughts on that in my column this week:
