In France they do infrastructure for fun, every decent mid size town has a tram, Paris converts roads to cycle lanes from motor vehicle gridlock "pas de problém"

Netherlands takes national pride in infrastructure. Dams, cyclepath. Roads in tiptop condition

UK: nah, sorry Bruv maybe in 20 years
Remember when HS2 to Leeds was cancelled by the NIC's shitty maths and fundamental lack of expertise, and Leeds was thrown the bone of "you'll get trams" and I said those would never be delivered?

The Basque Government/Biscay provincial government have just agreed to finance the FIFTH new Bilbao metro line covering a population of roughly that of Leeds and Bradford. Every station and platform is fully accessible and the current maximum fare is 0.76€ per journey.

Meanwhile, in other devolved areas... It's all going great! Maybe we shouldn't rely on Partnership UK hangers on in central government OR the most nakedly dodgy bunch of regional private interests to build our communities?

Maybe there's another way? Maybe!?

Its such bollocks. Every year when I go to France there’s infrastructure that wasn’t there a year ago and trams and extensive bus networks are a basic fact of life.

Not to mention how quickly we were able to roll this stuff out a century ago…

Bus deregulation was inflicted on the public with no democratic input or oversight, wrecking rural services and adding pointless complexity. Fares went up, ridership went down.

Even putting all that to one side, the whole proposition very plainly makes no sense.
