"I know they killed him"

Lucía Pedro Juan was detained with her husband, Francisco Gaspar Cristóbal Andrés, on Sept. 1. She was held for almost 3 months in Camp East Montana. She was deported to Guatemala. Her husband died on Dec. 3.

I traveled to speak with her for the El Paso Times.
Exclusive: She survived ICE custody; her husband died during detention
Guatemalan widow shared a hug, a tickle and these words with her husband: "Cheer up." It was the last time she saw him alive while they were in ICE custody.

This makes me realize that “Trump cannot be constrained and will do whatever he wants, so we all have to shift our standards and describe the world in terms of how he sees it” is the exact pathway through which American legal and political institutions have surrendered to MAGA
NB: When I, a professor of law, profess that an act is unlawful, I am not doing it to inform the lawbreaker, but rather to inform you, the reader.

So the question “what, like you think he cares?” is inapposite. The question is whether *you* care. I think you should, which is why I bother.

Surely the leadership of her party would come out and make statements of solidarity and follow up with action on this gross abuse of power, right?
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's son was pulled over by ICE and forced to prove he is an American.

Two options:

1) ICE deliberately targeted him.

2) ICE is stopping all non-White people without any probable cause and forcing them to prove they are citizens.

Hard to say which option is scarier.

"ICE and CBP must be abolished" is the only reasonable position. We can debate the specifics of new agencies for immigration functions, but these agencies are simply too infected with a culture of impunity, racism, and fascism to continue. They're gangs with badges.

This is a key problem thinking about, eg, the base of evidence we'd need to produce as scholars for a renewed VRA. What evidence would SCOTUS find justifies 15th A powers? Is there any? This, as much as anything, is why we need court reform
2/ First, when Congress has legislated in response to national problems, the Roberts Court has repeatedly either struck it down or interpreted it into a nullity. Congress gave us the Voting Rights Act and its reauthorizations; the Court gave us Shelby County, Brnovich, etc.
