The fact that one of the most interesting versions of Captain Hook is probably from the 90's Fox's Peter Pan & The Pirates, is kind of crazy.

Hell I have a comic about magical doctors and even they can't fix everything. Easy explanation, in a high technology or high magic setting, there's as many new hazards/diseases as there are cures. That wheelchaired person could be missing their entire lower nervous system due to time/space warps!
I have a friend who said, of Starfleet Academy, that this took them out of it - that seeing a person in a wheelchair in the 32nd century seemed unrealistic, since medicine in Star Trek "should be able to cure whatever was wrong with them."
