GOOD NEWS! Researchers have made a HUGE breakthrough towards a UNIVERSAL antiviral. By targeting sugar molecules found on the surface of many viruses that SHARE structural similarities, they identified FOUR compounds that successfully BLOCKED infections from SEVEN different viruses.

Pet parrots which typically live alone (whilst those in the wild live in large flocks) were given the technology to call each other. They would use it for up to three hours a day, and developed favourite friends 💔

i think one of the worst notions in us culture is this idea that you ever can possibly "get over" the death of someone you love dearly. if you really loved them that much theres no getting over it, ever. there's living w it and not having it consume every waking moment of your life. but never "over"

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have revealed a synthetic glycosystem -a sugar-coated polymer nanoparticle- that can BLOCK SARS-CoV-2 from infecting human cells, REDUCING infection rates by NEARLY 99%. Acting as a decoy, the molecule BINDS to the spike protein, PREVENTING it from attaching to real cells.

UK: What if everyone had masked up? Analysis of app data has the answer:
"Respirators would have dropped the rate of COVID transmission by an estimated factor of 9, compared with 0.6 for surgical masks. A factor of 9 is enough to put SARS-COV-2 into exponential decay!

What if everyone had masked up? Analysis of app data has an answer
Modelling study based on almost 250,000 positive COVID-19 tests in the United Kingdom shows that universal masking could have cut transmission markedly.

Most scientists still think COVID got “mild” and only threatens the immunocompromised. That belief keeps the whole machine humming.

OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?

🙌 Great news in New Scientist. An experimental study shows that air filters in classrooms:

Reduced absence by:
👩‍🏫 12.5% or 1.3 days per pupil

Reduced PM2.5 by:
🚸 32%

Air filtration is a simple way to improve life for everyone. So what's stopping the government?!

It is difficult to convey how monumentally idiotic Trump’s tariffs are.

Allow me to try.

Let’s begin with Adam Smith.

In the 200 years prior to Smith’s 1776 “Wealth of Nations” Mercantilism was the dominant view of trade.

We don't need vaccines because we don't see widespread disease

We don't need clean water regulations because we have clean water

We don't need NATO/US hegemony because Europeans haven't killed each other since WWII
1/ I wonder if there's a complement to Mettler's _Submerged State_ thesis: the successful state thesis. In brief: American government has *in many ways* been so successful for so long that Americans have forgotten why they need it, making anti-government rhetoric more appealing.

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.
Wired is dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Others should follow
As the administration does its best to hide public records from the public, Wired magazine is stepping up to help stem the secrecy

No matter how much trouble Trump gets into here, he will be bailed out by a news media that will literally invent fake information to justify his actions if necessary and, in the worst case, a very clever judiciary that will invent new laws to justify his actions retrospectively.

Musk claims Social Security is a "gigantic magnet to attract illegal immigrants."

In fact, immigrants here illegally do not collect Social Security. But they pay $25.7 billion a year into it, a recent study found, so these undocumented workers are actually subsidizing Americans.
