Yep. Hamas' planning was obviously thorough; surely they assumed Israel would respond with massive retribution.

It does, yes. The problem with that point is that a little innocent kid in Gaza City is going to run out of food and water far faster than the Hamas leadership, and is also far more vulnerable to short-term deprivation.
