We've reached the point in our descent into fascism where the Jewish governor's house getting firebombed on Passover by a guy trying to bash his head in with a sledgehammer is overshadowed by the story of the President saying he wants to build foreign gulags for US citizens.

Donald Trump cares as much about stopping antisemitism as Joe Biden cares about playing Minecraft.
Not Antisemitism (according to MAGA):

- Firebombing a Jewish governor‘s house during Passover
- Doing a Sieg Hitler salute
- Eating dinner with neo-Nazis

Antisemitism (according to MAGA):

- Saying Israelis and Palestinians deserve rights and dignity
- Using freedom of speech on campus

Weird that after a prominent obviously antisemitic attack on a sitting governor after Seder that the supposedly antisemitism obsessed administration hasn't said or done anything.

Yesterday, in my small Hudson valley town of ~14k people I attended an anti-Trump rally and a minor league baseball game. The really was at a heavily trafficked intersection. The game was in a nice stadium with decent concessions.

There were way more people at the anti-Trump rally.

Everyone wants there to be a grand scheme behind all of this but the terrible truth is that extremely stupid people are in charge and they have a fanatical devotion to wrong, childlike concepts of society and economics cooked up by right wing radio hosts in order to sell tainted dietary supplements

This—what Trump is doing now in trying to destroy American universities, research, and free speech while blaming it on pretend offense to the Jews is certainly the most profoundly antisemitic act I’ve seen from US government in my lifetime.
The claim that the destruction of essential civilizational institutions is being done in the name of the Jews is itself a form of antisemitism—cultural vandalism carried out in our name.

That, my friends, is rank bullshit.

What's especially pernicious of Trump's invocation of "Jewish safety" in his attacks on higher ed is that (1) it is antisemitic in and of itself and (2) it is intentionally designed to foster antisemitism by making people associate Jews with the fascist regime.

I love this thread from Senator Whitehouse because what he does here--giving maximum good faith to the other side's argument--is exactly what we need more of. We need to be maximally intellectually humble and to show maximum good faith to people on our side. No, this doesn't mean total conformity.
I did a lot research into how a shutdown might play out, and there was lots to fear; not least that the Trump/Musk/Vought axis of MAGA extremists would love a shutdown, and want a long one, and use it to cruel advantage. What was there to fear?

I’ve suspected for a few years that Facebook has done way more damage than Fox News. Most non-conservatives roll their eyes at “I heard this on Fox”. Almost everyone I know over 35 is at least willing to give some credence to “I saw this on Facebook”
Every time I say, "That doesn't sound right, mom. Could you send me a source for that? I'd be interested to read," & she doesn't because "Oh, it was something I saw on Facebook, I can't find it now." Even if they're not remembering details, it's the overall IMPRESSION that shapes them over time.

The biggest problem, of course, is the white supremacy. But the persistent effort on the left to segregate Jews from the movement to counter white supremacy is...actually furthering the stated goals of white supremacy. www.jta.org/2025/03/07/u...

I knew this would happen, but it's still surreal to hear another nation's leader talk to us in a televised address the way US presidents have historically spoken to the citizens of countries led by dictators and despots.
Trudeau: "I want to speak first directly to the American people. We don't want this. We want to work with you as a friend and ally. We don't want to see you hurt either. But your government has chosen to do this to you. As of this morning, markets are down and inflation is set to rise dramatically."

I'm going to keep repeating this until they haul me away but

-- Trump's 2024 win was not an historic landslide but a fairly modest win (Carter won by a bigger margin in 1976)

-- Even if he *had* won a landslide, he repeatedly denounced Project 2025 & pretended he wasn't going to do any of this

Fair point, but this also feels like a distinction without a difference. We as consumers expect better from the press. I don't care about the inside baseball. I care about the results.
I’m sorry. You can all be mad at journalists for this or whatever. And maybe in some cases it’s deserved. But this is a high-risk profession that’s dying. There’s little support for most working journalists who still have jobs.

When you blame “the media,” blame executives. Not workers.

My gripe here is we already knew this. We knew this eight years ago. What has the press done about it other than cede ground in the name of "access"?
