Sigh

Self-checkout is evil, and this is why.
Here’s the thing about self checkout. Companies have determined that it is more cost effective to take the loss from theft that automation eases than it is to pay people to work in their stores. When one puts it like that, the quality of the tech or the apparent convenience* are beside the point.+

He lectured students in discussion sections about why the (female) professor was wrong about the British empire. So no discussion. Not cool, and the students were not happy.

Very useful thread
Every time I talk to someone outside of Minnesota, we always spend time on *really* basic things they have don’t understand about what is happening here.

So let’s do a Q&A. What are your most basic questions about what’s going on in Minnesota?

Abolish DHS. If you can imagine a world before Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, you can imagine a world without the Department of Homeland Security. My latest at @startribune.com. (gift link)
Perry: Abolish ICE? How about DHS altogether.
"We have models for how to structure federal immigration oversight that doesn't rely on an unaccountable masked secret police force running rampant in our streets," David M. Perry writes.

I worry about all the stuff that is discarded because it was digitized, or all online publications. But there will still be some collections!

Proofreading my index, which is almost worse than doing it in the first place.

Assuming those exist still.

If you're living somewhere outside the USA, one thing you can do is pressure your leaders to boycott World Cup and Olympic events here.

I tried that. Ugh.

Tried to arrest someone for spitting on them? Seriously? You would have taken them to court for that? Those ICE guys are not the brightest bulbs!

I’m so sorry. That’s worse than decaf!

Flavored water.

I know I don't have a ton of media followers, but I'll put this out there anyway: if you need someone to comment/offer context on the removal of the slavery exhibit at the President's House site in Philly, get in touch. I just finished an entire book on Americans' fight over Washington and slavery.

Terrifying what our students will have to sort through.

Clearly AI. Ugh.

I have one cup of coffee a day max, usually after lunch. Then I take a nap!

We actually tried that, until the 1960s. It was a natural experiment. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I just discovered that I’d bought *decaf* coffee. Clearly my brain was not working when I was grocery shopping!
National media should really be covering the fact thay every major school, museum, and arts institution in the Twin Cities, and hundreds of local businesses are closed tomorrow to protest federal occupation.

Nothing like this at this scale has happened anywhere in America anytime in living memory.
RFK Jr. appointee Kirk Milhoan has just clearly stated, out loud, that he wants to experiment on the people of the United States by seeing what happens as vaccination coverage plummets and infectious diseases spread.
Republicans spent the entire hearing accusing Jack Smith of prosecuting Trump for political reasons and falsely claiming he was being directed by Biden and Garland. Ironically, while they were doing that, Trump was telling Bondi on Truth Social that she should prosecute Smith.
