Every instance of "AI democratizes the arts, you're classist and ableist and a gatekeeper for trying to stop it" is a slap in the face to the literally centuries of poor, disabled people making art on the margins and a crass lie in service of a machine that strips down and regurgitates dreams

A small but very deep thing that bothers me about generative AI as a shortcut to practice and work and skill is the basic assumption that it’s impossible to take pleasure in a creative pursuit that you aren’t very good at and I assure you that is not the case

Had a lovely time meeting up with colleagues from Hong Kong and Shanghai for lunch today - and got tackle-hugged by another colleague from Hong Kong who stopped by our table. So far, we've only ever exchanged e-mails, and we were both THRILLED to finally meet in person.

This is a hard column to write. So I’ll just say it: AAR is retiring. All About Romance launched in 1996. It was created by the incredible Laurie Gold, and shaped over the past thirty years by a remar...

“The first of several students detained by immigration officers...” shouldn’t even be a sentence
Federal authorities are releasing fourth-grader Elizabeth Zuna, the first of several students detained by immigration officers in the Minneapolis suburb of Columbia Heights, the school district's superintendent said.

It’s really something watching super-rich assholes only care about getting richer, while the rest of us ordinary folks are out here every day passing around donations of money and time trying to keep us all alive and safe.

This is a fascinating story. ICE tried to buy a warehouse in VA from a Canadian company, to turn into a detention center. One of the company’s advertising partners basically told them that if they sold, they could kiss their ads goodbye.

Just the nicest, sweetest people who will tell you in the most polite, ingratiating way the true and deep monstrousness that inhabits their very souls.
Kindergarten teacher called a prank ICE hotline thinking it was real. She called to report her 6 year old student to ICE to try to get them and their family deported.

6 years old.

She does not enjoy hearing her own words and actions played back to her.

I'm not even trying to argue about what should or shouldn't be a crime.

My point is that when fascists control the government, they criminalize ALL protest eventually.

Not to mention the very existence of target populations.

Tomorrow I'm doing a lecture with a glorious disaster of a medieval Cymraeg story & so today I'm putting it on Bluesky (so I don't have to open X-itter where I told it the first time)

It might be incestuous & sort of has bestiality, but it's also one of the oldest Welsh stories with an LGBT theme!

Minneapolis is 2.6mil people.

Springfield is 60,000 with 15,000 of that population under threat of deportation (1/4th of the whole city.)

Springfield is 26 square miles. 1000 ICE agents is 40 agents per mile.

People are terrified. We need all the help we can get.

There was an image, of a very cute furry creature. And a text, which loosely translated said:

a woman reached out to donate 500,000 delta skymiles to get people home to MN as they are released from custody in TX.

we're getting flights booked today. it should be enough to get at least 15 people home.

delta should be doing for free since they take ICE money.

With all the *gestures around wildly* going on, I thought I’d re-up my gear recommendation for a hot protest where there’s likely to be gas deployed. This kit aims to solve two problems:

1. Stop the gas from settling on the skin of your face, head, and neck

2. Be cheap enough to throw away after

I am not an expert. I used this when I was in a hot protest in 2020, and it worked well enough to keep me going even though they gassed us six times. It’s an 80% solution, not 100%; it mitigates the effects rather than prevents them. You’ll still hurt, it just won’t be near as bad. But it costs <$10
